I'm looking forward to summertime worm fishing and I am wondering what is the best rod for worm fishing. I mainly will be throwing 10"-12" worms but occasionally something smaller. I like to throw them with a 3/8oz tungsten(is this too heavy?) along with 14 # flourocarbon. The current rod that I have for this rig is my Quantum Smoke 7' MH. I feel like this rod isn't heavy enough for worm fishing for some reason. I find it very well for things such as chatterbaits, swimjigs, and spinnerbaits but not worms. Is this rod a good rod for worm fishing or should I look into something a little bit longer and heavier? Also what brands are best?

Thanks!

I'd say that would be a perfect worm setup for throwing what you mentioned. As far as brands go, I would say it's a personal preference. It all depends on how much money you want to spend.

The biggest worm I throw is a 7 inch power worn with a 3/16 weight. I use a mh for this, your setup seems like it would be considerably heavier than mine. Maybe a heavy rod would be better for it.

I am not a huge fan of quantum but I have heard good things about the smoke series rods. Having never owned one I don't know how the 7 MH rod fishes. 10-12 inch worms are pretty wind resistent so I would say a 3/8 oz weight would be at the lower end of what I would go with. I have fished them on 12-15# floro with 3/8 - 1/2 oz tungsten weights with no issues.

A max price or a range would help pool some rod options together. A rod like the dobyns champion extreme 744 would be a great rod for these and your jig needs. It is heavy action 4 powered rod that would excel between 3/8 -5/8 oz and even a bit heavier. The 7'2 MH shimano cumara (previous Gen rod) is a pretty stout stick. My third pick would be phenix recon 715. I wouldt rank them in that general order. St croix is known for beefier and more powerful rods but I lack experience with their line. Loomis makes great rods but I personally feel their decent rods start at the IMX line for bottom contact applications.

If you feel you are lacking power only just step up to a slightly heavier rod. If you are lacking distance perhaps a longer rod would help. If it lacks feel or something else maybe look at a different line of rods.

I like a heavy action rod for all of my plastics.  I don't like a lot of play in my rod when I am fishing in the weeds.

Your setup seems good enough, I have never owned a Quantum rod before so I can't comment on if the MH seems under specced vs other rods.  Maybe check out a Quantum H rod at the store and see how that feels  If you are looking for another rod then I'd go with a St Croix Avid MH 7' (seems to have more power than it is rated, own 3 Avids) or Crucial 7'2" Heavy.

Of course I use a Heavy/Fast and MH Shimano Compre/Crucial for my jig and worm.  I would use whichever one when a situation requires it, so my first recommendation especially if you like Quantum rods to buy a Heavy version.  If you want to explore trying another line I'd recommend an Avid MH 7', Shimano Crucial...or really any 150-200 range rod would work for a bottom contact.  If you are budget constraint like I am, go for a Veritas or Compre.  Personally I think the Compre is more sensitive, but that is just my personal opinion.  In the end it's all about what is comfortable for you.

I throw light t-rigs( 1/8 - 1/4 ) on a 7'2" MH fast Crucial, and I throw all my heavy t-rigs ( 3/8 + ) on a 7'2" MH x-fast Crucial. The x-fast actually makes the rod feel a little bit heavier powered.

I just bought the same power/action Crucial last week, it did seem stiff enough for heavier.  I used my Compre Heavy/F for the same application.  Thanks for confirming!

i my self have several worm rod set ups . it basically depends on your fishing situation.

for a small worm on a light weight wire hook i use a 6'6'medium fast action rod.10 -12 poound test.

if i use a heavier wire hook with say 14-15 pound test i go up to a 7' medium heavy micro guide rod.

the best advise i can give is to take into consideration how you want to fish your soft plastics and

match your terminal tackle to the rod you are using.Hook size line weight exc.

x3 ... For bigger worms like you mentioned I use a 7' MH, 20lb FC with either a 3/8 or 1/2oz weight.

I use a 7' MF Prodijy rod with a BPS Prolite Finesse reel and 10# flourocarbon
