leadslinger Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 I have been using St. Croix Mojo Bass, 6'6" Med/Fast rods for my Revo's. I recently bought an Abu Garcia Veritas 6'6" MH/Fast Micro Guide rod for my Revo SX. The Veritas Micro Guide doesn't seem to cast nearly as far. I use this setup mostly for jigs and texas rigged plastics. I haven't tried swapping the setups yet. Anyone have a similar experience with Micro Guide rods? I'm not sure if its the Micro Guide design at all. Maybe it's the MH rod vs the Medium Mojo, or just an inherent difference in the Veritas rod. I'm thinking about swapping the Veritas for the Falcon Bucoo. My price point is around $100/rod. Thanks. Bill Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 I have owned mojos in both spinning and casting models and haven't noticed a difference in casting distance when comparing the same reels, lines and baits to my rage series which are micro guides. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted March 14, 2013 Super User Posted March 14, 2013 Your difference is because you have a Medium action and a Medium Heavy action. From my understanding the Veritas rods are a bit on the stiff side.I cant confirm that because I've never used one, but more than likely the guides are not the issue. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 14, 2013 Super User Posted March 14, 2013 I will agree that veritas rods are more stiff than there counterparts in the mojo line up. I have a 7'mf spinning in both and they are different sticks for sure. I will say the veritas makes a really good jerkbait rod though. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 The advantage of micro guide rods is the weight savings in the tip section and resulting improved sensitivity. casting distance is affected by several aspects of each setup and IMO is a distant second to accuracy as far as putting fish in the boat. To maximize performance of a setup concentrate on lure, line, reel set up and maintenance. Quote

Super User dodgeguy Posted March 14, 2013 Super User Posted March 14, 2013 falcon is stiff also.get m'h and you'll have the niceset rod in that range. Quote
Shoalamfishin Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Agreed, the rod stiffness is likely the cause of your troubles. Falcons rods are generally soft compared to most other rods. You normally have to go one power rating above what you desire; for instance if you want a medium power rod get a medium heavy. I have several Bucoo rods and they performance slightly under the power rating, but aside from that they make for very good rods. Quote

Agreed, there are too many uncontrolled variables for there to be an accurate conclusion on casting distance. You would need the same reel in the same condition, with the same line and amount of line, casted the exact same way on the exact same rod with the only difference being the guides. Or you would need to at least get as close as possible to controlling all other variables... I am with DVT, biggest advantages to microguides are weight savings and resulting sensitivity from. Quote
