Robertqq Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Hello, Will be trying out braided line for the first time this season. Have never used before. Will be PowerPro line on a Spinning Reel. Freshwater only. Pond and stream fishing for Panfish and small Bass, mainly. Have a few questions, please: a. All the posts and Forums say to wind it on very tightly to prevent its digging in thru the turns below it and causing all sorts of problems and tangles. Makes sense. But, the very first time you cast the line, all the "inital tightness" is gone. After this cast, the tightness or tension on retrieving will be dertmined Solely by what's on the end of the line (hopefully a fish). All this very tight initial winding will be gone. Thoughts ? b. With mono, having the wind direction on the reel the same as how it comes off of the spool is important. e.g., cw off the spool for bails turning cw on the reel. Is this also important for Braid ? I ask, because there is nothing on the PowerPro box, or on their site, that even discusses this. The Power Pro Box says to keep spool in box when spooling, so you wouldn't even know which direction it's coming off of ! Is it that there is essentially no-memory for braid, and hence not important ? Still (very) important to do ? Or,...? c. The Spectra braid (Moss Green) is certainly a lot more visible than clear mono. Do you folks use a clear mono leader ? Or, for small Pond and stream fishing for Panfish and small Bass, the extra visibility hardly matters at all in practice ? BTW: just curious: folks still use mono, mainly ? Thanks for help, Bob Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 a. Just the line you cast out will be loose. It's important that the line below is would tight. Since you catch a fish with the line out, it's not a big deal with digging. b. You wind right off the bottom of the spool, not either side, like this: c. Depends on the cover. In rocks or near wood cover like laydowns or docks, I use a fluoro leader. an Albrght knot makes a good connection. In weeds, or heavily stained water, straight braid is fine. You can color the line black with a sharpie marker if you want. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 The line digging in comes when you have your drag set too tight and the line is pulled hard. Keep your drag set properly and the line won't dig in. Clear mono or fluoro is not invisible. I am of the belief that bass are not smart enough to figure out that line is a bad thing. If they got spooked by seeing fishing line, why aren't they able to tell that that hunk of wood, metal or plastic with treble hooks hanging from it is not really food? Keep life and fishing simple and skip the leader. 2 Quote
Super User Marty Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 I've used 15# Power Pro on spinning for years. While I don't think it's necessary to wind the line on the same way as mono, I do it anyways on the theory that it can't harm. Whether in the days when I used mono or today with braid, I have always used cheap mono as backing and leave enough room to add 50-60 yards of the line I fish with; that's normally more than adequate for bass fishing. I've only used that Moss Green color and never use leaders. I don't believe the visibility of the line (and all lines are visible to some degree) makes a difference, but not everyone shares this belief. You have to decide what you believe and act accordingly, i.e., do what makes you comfortable and gives you confidence. Quote
bassmayo Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 i use power pro i use alot of the 10# test 2# diameter do have no problem of fish seeing it i use it for jigs, drop shot, split shot rig,i use 65# for my alabama rig thats the only 2 si zes that i use, just remeber that braid does not like rip rap, i fish pretty clear water visibility about 10 feet. i like to keep a green sharpie marker on the boat so when the braid starts to loose its color you can rub the sharpie up and down the line for only about 3 feet. if you have problems with it digging in try this cast the line out on your longest cast possible then pull off about 15 feet more and put some electrial tape on the spool covering the rest of the braid on the spool this will keep it from binding up , once you get fimiliar with the line you can remove it. also buy you a ccheap crochet hook for picking out those really serious backlashes. good luck and tight lines Quote
TRYTOFISH Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 I use braid on everything. My uncle calls it the "devil wire", because when it backlashes, its a bear to pick out. Quote
