Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 For the last two weeks my back has been acting up. My lower back was real achey all of last week until I got home on Thursday. After my welcome home present from my wife I could hardly walk or stand up straight. I popped a Valium and all was better until Sunday morning when it started all over again. This week Ive been unable to bend down but can still crouch. Plus it spasms everytime I get in or out of the car or stand up fron sittibg down. Well I went to hang out with my buddies at the gym down here lastnight, and one of the girls worked over my back. I felt wonderful a little achey but still felt about 90% back to normal. Until about an hour ago. I was working twenty feet up on top of a acid tank and my pain came back with a vengence. Now its spasming dang near everytime I move or twist a little. This is rotten as all hell. Hopefully it will go away before the week is out. I honestly have no clue what I did to the dang thing for it to hate me this bad. Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 Bad news.  Get to a doctor at once.  Sounds like a ruptured disk or worse.  The massage pushed the disk back together but you really need surgery or being under a doctor's care.  If you can honestly say it happened at work at a specific date and time and you let your boss know you may have a workers' comp claim.  Otherwise it is your health insurance.  Please do not fool around with your back. Get it looked at and have the X-rays and MRIs completed like yesterday.  Keep us posted and have your wife keep us posted while you are recovering from surgery!!! 1 Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 Hey man, there are doctors for things that don't improve in a few days.  Your back is nothing to fool around with. It could be a bulging disc, or something else structural. It could be muscular. It could be a part of the nerve tunnel that is too small. There is a reason they immobilize people who may have injuries that threaten the spinal cord.  See your primary care physician. Let them evaluate what is going on, and refer you to a specialist based on their observations. Do not fool around with back problems. Do not let anyone "work over" your back. You could end up in a wheelchair.  They can replace hips, knees, finger and toe joints. They can even swap out organs. But there isn't a whole lot they can do for spinal nerves once they are damaged. 2 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 I'm not one for doctors a d like to tuff things out but the old timers(sorry guys lol) are right man time to go see the doc and stop lifting till cleared. Quote
central.PA.bass Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Don't panic... I do not believe you have a ruptured disc like one may have mentioned... Its possible but I would be much more concerned if you had any change in bowel/bladder, leg weakness, numbness/tingling, etc.   Make an appointment with your primary care physician... from there he/she will take an X-ray, send you to physical therapy (my job), from there you either get better if it is muscular, or if PT fails, they will send you back to your doctor who will then order an MRI and send you to a spine specialist...  Hopefully a PT can fix it.. if you have any specific questions feel free to PM me Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 Hey Raider - That's sounds pretty bad man - I think we'll have to put you down . . Sorry dude. Â Â A-Jay 2 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 O'l lady is gonna have to rethink your welcome home presents  Go see a doc homie.it's not only your health you're risking, but your career and the ability to take care of your family as well. I had another MRI done 2 weeks ago. I've got 2 discs popped out in my neck from my injury last year. At this point I don't know when or if I'll be able to go back to doing the same kind of work. Hell, one day I may be a greeter at a Wally World near you. Quote

Super User deaknh03 Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 What was her welcome home present? A karate chop in the back? 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 Agree with everyone else and get it checked out. I have lower back problems very similar to hours but I'll spare the details. One thing that has helped me out a lot is making sure my hamstrings are nice and loose. Whenever they are tight it pulls on everything in the lower back and can cause problems. Good luck. Quote
PondBassNoob Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 only accept surgery as a last resort, it never seems to end well. rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflamatories are your best friends in this situation. I herniated a disc quite a number of years ago and thankfully i didnt go through with the surgery that was suggested by my first doctor, been pain free for 7yrs now after 3months of pt. 1 Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 I had similar sounding issues, mine were muscular, but now I can tweak it if I'm not careful. Quote

My pops got cut on a few years back. He blew out three or four disc and had something else wrong too. He has a foot drop now and is completely disabled and hurts everyday. I honestly dont think I could deal with ending up like that. Quote

Thats what Im thinking mine are. Ill know for sure once I get back in town and can see my doc. The pain is down below my spine and isolated to one side. It only starys hurting when I twist or shift on that side. Its not radiating or anything of that nature its just sharp dang pain in that spot. Quote

Super User Root beer Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 My brother wrecked his motorcycle a few years ago and actually broke his back in the accident. His back has never been the same since. Go see a doctor and hope it isn't chronic. Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted March 14, 2013 Super User Posted March 14, 2013 First off I would get it checked out to make sure that it is just your back. Second, don't panic my back goes out like that every couple of years or so. Usually takes about a month of taking it easy to heal up. I learned the hard way that just because it feels better in a couple of days does not mean that it is healed up. shootermcbob Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Go to the Doctor! Â Why are you waiting? Even if it is just muscular, at least you will know what the problem is, and have a plan to help get better with physical therapy. Even if it is a disc, proper posture and a well planned therapy routine that you will be taught may reduce the problem and eliminate the pain. Â For your sake, and your family's sake, go to the doctor. Â I broke a vertabra in my back years ago...back pain is an awful thing. I would hate to see you injure yourself further. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted March 14, 2013 Author Super User Posted March 14, 2013 Got an appointment for 0845 tomorrow. I would have gone to the doctor sooner however Im not working in town right now. Gotta make that money one way or another. 1 Quote
Traveler2586 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 I agree with Fishing Rhino, Sam, and the others.  I have also had chronic lower back pain for thirty some years now, it's no fun.  I'll add one thing from my lesions learned book; when your back is acting up, don't climb on ladders or work above the floor anywhere you can fall from. You can be working when your back "grabs" you with a sharp sudden pain that can through you off balance and you could slip. Or, your back could act up to the point where you can't move, and can't get down from your work site. Let your boss know what's going on so he can help you with safe work assignments; he doesn't want to fill out all the paper work if something goes wrong on the job, so he'll work with you while you get better.  Good luck.   EDIT: BTW, get a note from the Doc, for your boss, saying you have lower back pain and are being treated. Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted March 15, 2013 Author Super User Posted March 15, 2013 Raider, How did the appt. go today??? Hope you are feeling better. I have a very good repetoire with my doctor. Naw I called up and asked for anything available. They told me they would call me back if there was a cancellation. Well ten minutes later they called and said there was a cancellation. So I accepted and thats what happened. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted March 15, 2013 Author Super User Posted March 15, 2013 Update on back. It is a strained muscle. Doc gave me some muscle relaxers and anti inflamatories as well as some stretches to do. Said if the problem persist to come back and see him or call my Orthopedic. So all is well. I told him if he would have preacribed me the Andro gel and other goodies I asked for the last time I saw him this wouldnt be an issue now. He informed me that yet again I DONT have low T and that he isnt liscensed to prescribe veterinary drugs. (This is a three year running joke between us). He also said to go light at the gym dor the next two weeks. Quote
