Vise Opinions

I know there's probably a few fly tiers like myself on here. Plus I know some of you use them for doing jigs. What is your favorite vise for around $100?

I know you said $100... mine is more like $200 and I believe was more at purchase ten years ago. I have a Renzetti Traveler with a full base.

I have a Griffin Spyder vice. It is around $100 at Bass Pro Shops.  Not a high end vice but for my bass jigs it serves me well.

I would advise you not to buy a cheap a vice.  I've got a rotating vice that I paid about $50 for and I'm not very happy with it.  The jaws don't tighten down well enough to put any real pressure on what you're tying.  You also have to loosen the jaws to rotate it.  I wish I would have bought a nicer vice to start with.

Sorry I can't offer you guidance in a sub $100 vise, but if you're willing to consider a little more money or search for a used vise I'd recommend either a Regal or a HMH.  Both will do a fine job tying hair jigs and streamer sized flies and both will last your lifetime.  If you want to tie very small flies I'm sure there are better choices.

I'm not familiar with vises in the $100.00 range since I decided to invest in a Regal, a great tool in all aspects, and worth the $220.00.

 

Consider saving until you can get a really good one which you'll enjoy for decades.

Yeah I don't have that much to spend. Thanks for the help though guys. I'm an avid fly tier but I'm just not in the position to dish that much out for a vise.

I use a Regal for bass, saltwater flies, and jigs..You can probably find a used one for $100 on the auction sites.

I have been using a Dan Vice for close to 15 years.  It does all that I want.  You can get them at Cabela's.

Griffin odyssey spyder vise, $85 bucks, it handles up to 4/0 hook, it is a true rotary vise and has a lifetime warrany and is mostly metal, the best rotary vise you can get four less than $150. I tie a lot of hair jigs using hooks from a size #8 on a 1/48oz jig head all the way up to 4/0 hooks on a 1/2oz jig head and it is fantastic and you tie with confidence with the lifetime warranty.

I like the looks of the Spyder vice, next time I'm at Cabela's I will check it out.  I don't tie a ton of stuff but when I do, I don't want to spend half my time fighting with the vice.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Keep in mind, I tie flies down to 28s on my vice the whole way up to full size 5/0 bass jigs

Regal...have had one for over thirty years and have tied everything from size 24 flys up to large bass jigs. Free standing base.
