Frog with Braid Want to be able to cast it a mile Tournament MG or ? super Duty ? 7.1 BB1 or ? 1/2 oz jerbaits want long casts in clear water Tournament MG ? Quote
katmandew Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Haven't used the MG, but the TP and BB1 are top notch reels. I have 2 TP's in 7.1 and 6.4. My BB1 is 5.1. Quote
38 Super Fan Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 I've not had my Super Duty long at all, but I think it would definately be the best Lews reel for something like Frogging. Quote
tbone1993 Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 I love my abu garcia winch for deep cranking. I have not used a bb1 but have felt my friends and would need time on the water to talk about it. My tournament pro is 7.1 and a machine at anything fast. It would be a mistake to not buy 2 tournament pros, one for jigs and one for frogs. I would not want the bb1 for frogs since it doesnt not have instant anti reverse. Quote
21farms Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 tbone, on the 5:1 BB1 doesn't have instant anti-reverse. to the OP, i highly recommend you dip you toe in the water slowly and start with the one TP and perhaps one BB1. the BB1 casts differently...kinda hard to describe but you should check it out. where i think the BB1 excels is heavier lures...for the lighter stuff, my TPs give me better distance. bmlum415 Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 i use a bb1 for flipping and punching and a TP for flipping/pitching in7:1:1 and a tournament mg for cranks and spinnerbaits Quote
bassinyea Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 lews reels have been great for me so i think you will be happy. Like 21farms said above about the BB1, it does cast differently than the other reels and is meant for heavier lures. It doesnt have any magnets to fine tune your casting for lighter lures. When casting lighter lures 1/4 oz or so, I always use more magnets than centrifugal braking and when casting heavy crankbaits and jigs, use more of the centrifugal braking and turn the magnets down. If it were me I would get the BB1 for your deep diving crankbaits in 5:1 and a super duty 7:1 for your frogs. Everything else would be a tournament pro for me in the appropriate gear ratio. Have fun with your purchase. On another note, I also purchased a regular speed spool and a tournament MG and while i think they are great reels, just having the magnetic cast control I seem to lose some distance casting heavier baits than i would like. I stick to the tournament series and above for all of my lews reels because I like the dual cast control. Even though they proclaim the BB1 as a crankbait reel, I believe you will get better distance and more control on smaller crankbaits with a tournament pro. I think the 6:4 ratio for shallow cranks would work well for you though. Quote
johnthomas Posted March 13, 2013 Author Posted March 13, 2013 Hey thanks a lot people. I probably will go with a super duty for frogs and and tournament pro or tournament mg for small-med cranks and another one for jerkbaits. The only reason I'm thinking the MG is for a little bigger spool=longer casts?? or am I over thingking it? it also has a bigger handle which probably isnt needed for jerkbaits or small/med cranks. DOES THE EXTRA 30 YARDS OF LINE CAPACITY ON THE TOURNEY MG (AND THE SUPER DUTY) HELP IT TO CAST 1/2 OZ BAITS FARTHER THAN THE TOURNEY PRO??? Quote
bassinyea Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 The spool yardage doesn't make a difference in the lighter lures. One thing about the spool on the mg, it isn't drilled which means it wont throw the lighter cranks as well. The tournament pro has a drilled spool which is lighter weight and it spins up quicker which is better for lighter lures. Quote
