Does any body know a good little lake to go fishing in? I do not have a boat YET. I hope to get one if my small fishing company does well.

If you like crappie, the fishing pier at Powhatan Lakes is not bad.  Big ones hang out in the brush piles right next to the pier.  At Sandy River, the fishing pier has some nice catfish available.    Bear Creek Lake has some decent fishing with some well placed trees about 20 yards out from shore and next to the pier.  Check the VA DGIF site for locations with fishing piers and fishing opportunities.  You might there are more than you realize.

In addition to those there are also a multitude of rivers and creeks that you can wade around and catch some too.

Powhatan lakes does have some huge crappie, I caught one that measured 17" out of there once

Depending on how far you want to travel there are a lot of places up my way which rent boats. My personal favorite is Hunting Run Reservoir. It is bass HEAVY so if you want good number head there. The size is dependent on how you fish the lake but at this time of year they are still in deep water there. The VADGIF website will list several reservoirs which you could rent boats for a pretty reasonable price. Hope this helps

You have limited yourself without a boat or raft to fishing the bank.

 

Here are some places to consider fishing from a raft or kayak or walking the shoreline until you purchase your first bass boat:

Chickahominy Lake (fish Ed. Allen's dock, rent a boat or use your raft)

The places mentioned in the above posts.

The pond behind the Martin's store on Huguenot Road.

The pond off Southlake Blvd. (park across from NAPA)

The area between Hugueont Bridge and the Pony Pasture (need two guys and two cars) - great float! Fish the area past the Z-Dam which you may have to use the north shore to walk around with your raft or kayak.

The Pony Pasture. Great smallmouth and catfish area. Bring a buddy; wear a PFD; and be extra careful when you wade in the rocks upstream from where the kids swim and sun themselves.

The area between Huguenot Bridge and Bosher's Dam. Fish the calm area to the left of the dam and hold on!

Swift Creek in Pocahontas State Forest (boat rentals available)

Swift Creek Reservior off Genito Road

Citie of Henricus area and the Barge Pit in the James River

Hopewell Marina and stay in the Appomattox River (watch out for water moccasins so don't fish from the bank)

Lake Chesdin pier on the Dinwiddie side across from Seven Springs Marina which is on the Chesterfield County side

Walkerton on the Mattaponi where you can fish on both sides of the bridge and also in the river if you have a watercraft

The lakes at Innsbrook off Cox Road heading west on Broad Street. Fish the concrete ponds or walk around Lake Rooty on the other side of Nuckols Road. You can spend all day on Lake Rooty and catch some nice ones. Park by Snag-A-Job building or any of the buildings to your left after you cross Nuckols Road.

Shields Lake and Swan Lake in Maymount Park. Shields Lake is not good but Swan Lake can be fun.

Boat Lake in Maymount Park.

Check with Wdycrankbait on this site about fishing around the Nickle Bridge near Maymount Park. I will let him know you are sending him a PM as he is into guitars now and is not doing that much fishing.

Hobby Hills Farms Lake off Hobby Hills Road. Park on the road and walk up and down the road.

The pond off Lucks Lane before you get to Chafrter Colony and St. Francis Hospital.

The pond off Walton Park in Midlothian.

 

Bank fishing can be difficult due to the property owners and the terrain. You need written permission to fish the private lakes and ponds and unless you know someone it can be impossible to enjoy those waters. Homowners will call the local police in a heartbeat and you can get a ticket.

 

Ask the YOUNG guys at Tackle Express on Midlothian Turnpike for places to fish. I think the guy's name is Brian. Tell him Sam sent you and ask the store's owner, Craig, if he is going to the LSU crawfish boil this year.  Brian is a great guy and he bass fishes and he may be able to take you to the "Monday Only" ponds I told you about.

 

Speak with the guys at Green Top in the fishing department about the private ponds you can fish off Route 54 west of Ashland. And try to find an ADC map book of Metro Richmond to view all (or most) of the places to fish listed above and in other posts.

 

Please consider purchasing a GMCO map of any large lake or river so you can find places to fish and launch your watercraft.

 

You need to have your Virginia fishing license, needle nose pliers, a cell phone and in some instances wear your PFD if you are fishing from shore. Check out the Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet for the items you need to have on your raft or kayak to be legal.

 

Remember that the local rivers are tidal, meaning the tide can grab you and take you towards the bay. Always check the tides before fishing any local rivers. You want an outgoing tide for as long as possible.

 

Sandy River is a great place as is Bear Creek Lake for bass. And all of my locations are for bass fishing. Some are good and some are better.

 

Learn where to launch your boat and what bodies of water you can walk around, like the ones in Innsbrook and Lake Rooty.

You can add Briery Creek Lake for a shore fishing location also. The original parking lot/ramp area near the dam is a good shore fishing area with double digit bass caught occasionally there.

Amelia lake has a pier along with some shore line....alot of bank fisherman like going to the Innsbrook lakes bc you can walk all the way around them for the most part.
