SMLangler Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Okay I want to buy 4 new rods and reels this spring, what is yalls advice on how to pick the right rod with the right reel? I want to get a good Flipping rod 7’6’’-8’, a jig rod, a rod for top water baits, and frog rod. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 11, 2013 Super User Posted March 11, 2013 You are going to get a bunch of different answers. There are a ton of great rods out there. Price can help determine which rod would fit into your budget. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 11, 2013 Super User Posted March 11, 2013 Under $200 per combo? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 11, 2013 Super User Posted March 11, 2013 Under $200 per combo? Or under $200 for each item? Quote
Sutton Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 I use the abo Garcia vent they are very light and sell for 100 each. the nice thing is if you break it take it back and they swap them out. They have lots of sizes to chose from. I use the 7.6 for my jig and 7.3 for a frog Quote
SMLangler Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 Willing to pay 200 for reel and rod each Quote

Super User Teal Posted March 11, 2013 Super User Posted March 11, 2013 Lews Tournament Pro. They retail for 199.99. Can be found NIB on ebay for 140. Great reels. Very light and smooth. I have 5 and i love them Powell Rods 169.00 ( look on TW for sales) They make several lengths and powers for flipping. As for length and power thats up to you depending on what you need. But they have flipping rods from a medium all the wayy to a mag heavy. Jig rod -and Powell 714 Endurance is what i use. Awesome rod. Sensitive and plent of backbone. Frog rod - Powell 725 Endurance is what i have. Soft tip and super strong. I use it mainly for hollow body frogs and heavier top waters. But it works great as a jig/worm rod too. Ive used it for heavy rattle trap baits in thick hydrilla and liked it alot. Top water, - i use a Daiwa T rod. 6'6M but with your budget, look at the St. Croix Avid or 6'6 M F will do the trick. I told you what i use and that is what i would recommend for your budget. It is the best bang for your buck out there. However you cannot go wrong looking at the Shimano Reels, Shimano rods, St. Croix Rods. Alot of guys are also saying good things about the Daiwa Lexa reels. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 11, 2013 Super User Posted March 11, 2013 Right now - you can buy at BPS (online) the Bass Pro Qualifier reel for 79.99 or if you are patient you can find good deals for Shimano Citicas, Revo S..etc for a 100 new or used. As for the rods I'd go: 1. Flipping Rod 7'6" Heavy/F or XF - Veritas or Compre - both can be found around 100. Recommendation: Doubles as a Frog Rod...to save money for a better Jig Rod. If you want two rods then buy a 2nd one for this setup. 2. Top Water 6'8" - 6'10 Medium/F - Same thing Veritas or Compre 3. Jig Rod 6'10" - 7'2" MH/F or XF - Invest in a 150-200 dollar rod (Avid, Crucial, Cumara..etc) This is a bottom contact rig, you want a sensitive rod. I'd definitely use the flipping rod as my frog rod so you can get a better Jig Rod. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 11, 2013 Super User Posted March 11, 2013 Oh maybe I misunderstood your budget. If you're that high, I'd buy Crucials or Avid rods and as for reels. Tons of options, I hear Lews is good as Teal stated (Never own one, but because I can't buy them up here in Ontario, or at least haven't found a local retailer). I own Shimanos mostly 1 Chonarch, 4 Curado and 3 Citicas. So if it were me, I'd buy all Shimano I have never been done wrong by them. I do buy other brands though so I'm not just exclusively a Shimano fanatic. Just bought a Lexa 100 for 89.99 from BPS (reel trade in), i haven't used it yet..but it feels real good on my 6'6" Avid Medium/Fast, really balances well in my hands. They are regularly 129.99- 139.99 up here in Ontario. That could be an option for a reel. Quote

Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 11, 2013 Super User Posted March 11, 2013 you can buy lews here, a friend of mine is a dealer That is good to know. Where is your friend located? The three local shops where I am don't carry them, at least I never seen any Lews in stock ever. With all the rave reviews I was hoping to at least check them out. Quote

I would recommend you look and try as many rods as you can and see what feels best for you. Quote
paul25 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 if youcan catch the dobyns champion series on sale again id try to get one of those for jigs 7'3-7'6 mh-H, and id go with a chronarch reel from shimano it's a great reel for 200 bucks. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 12, 2013 Super User Posted March 12, 2013 Chronarch reels on Crucial rods. Tough to beat. There are also great combos mentioned already, this would just be my personal preference. Quote

I have the same powell endurance 714 for jigs and heavy texas rigs.this rod will not disappoint I have the powell max 735 for frogs and also use it as a heavy cover pitching rod.for top water I use a max 703cef which works as a great all around work horse rod.for a flipping rod you can't go wrong with the endurance 775 flip rod.I would pick a heavier rod if you wanted your flipping rod to double as a punching rod.
