On Deck Loose Hook Organizer

I once saw a boat that had a "hook organizer" that was "built in" and ran along the bow inside gunnel.

It went out about 6", and downward to the deck like a wedge and he had all the hooks he was going to use for the day inbedded on it. I don't know if it was a DIY or came with the boat that way. It was covered in some type of carpeting. My question is what type of carpeting would work to hold the hooks BUT would not be a disaster to pull the hooks out.

My question is why would you want to do this?

Years ago I made a lure hanger/ organizer on the inside of the gunnel on my aluminum boat for hanging crank and spinnerbaits that I used often. Today with a bass boat that has storage compartments with a wide variety of tackle organizers it easy keep everything out of the weather.

Fly fisherman use a wool like material to hold their flies in a folding wallet type organizer, maybe some fastened a similar organizer to the boat gunnel?

Why? Because I'm lazy, yea, but many times throught the day I'm swiching baits back and forth and I need them at hand and not in a pile. I also saves on having big boxes lying around when your just going to use a couple ot things out of a box.

I thought of wool too but that would just get soaked.

So you are not really talking about hooks, but lures with hooks, both single and treble types.

The big problem with exposed lure hangers without covers is the lures find a way to hook you and that can end your day.

If you don't have storage compartments with lure hangers built in the covers, then lure sponge lined lure wallets with Velcro will keep the lures from getting tangles and allow them to dry before putting them away at the end of the day. I use a small plastic pale in a storage compartment with slots cut around the lip to hang my large crank baits and swimbait on to let them dry and to reuse them during the outing. Anything I take off the rod goes into a covered locker so it will not blow out of the baot when running at speed

The fly fisherman wallet wool is artifical and doesn't have any loops to snag the hooks. Lure wallets ot blankets are available for nearly every size lure. Worm hooks I keep in a Plano type box, in the original bags and put a bag in my pocket to retire a new hook on, along with a few worm weights.

I have a small aluminum boat, so I don't have to worry about anything "blowing out"!  <lol>  But I hate to put wet lures, spinnerbaits, jigs back into their boxes/bags!  I've found that an old dishwasher silverware basket works great to hang my lures in to dry or to have to use later in the day!  In addition the handle allows for easy transport into the house at the end of the day, to put everything back into its respective compartment.

There's a product called "Lure Stick" that would work perfectly for what you want.  It's like $2.  There's also Cook's storage system, if you want something more Robust.  They go for $15 to 20.
