Hey All,

So I just acquired a nice Shimano Chronarch 50mg. The reel is in pretty good shape with just some minor boat rash. Mechanically it is sound. So I have heard many good things about this reel, but I was wondering if there is any beneficial upgrades that I could do to it.

Are there members on here who have the Chronarch 50mg that decided to modify their reel? If so, I would like to hear your comments on how it effected its performance. Conversely, I am also interested in members who own a Chronarch 50mg that have not decided to modify and their reasons for doing so.

Modifications I am considering are bearing upgrades, drag upgrades, and maybe supertuning. Probably do not want to supertune due to the effects being irreversible.

Also, any comments on this reels performance would also be appreciated. I have some curado 50e's and I am interested in seeing how the 50mg compares. Thanks everyone!

CH50/51 MG are my absolute favorite reels. I love them more than any other reel I own. I've tuned a couple with no ill effect, and I have upgraded bearings and drag on all. It isn't necessary at all, in terms of bearing upgrades, they're fine without them. The drag definitely benefits from C-Tex washers.

Glad to hear I got a nice reel, especially with it getting your respect. Sounds like I will go with some professional cleaning, C-tex drag upgrade, and go out and enjoy it.

Just curious, what about the CH50 has made it your favorite reel?  Also, is it strange that the reel came with extra reel magnets?

Thank you for your help and comments!

I'm not sure what extra reel magnets are you referring to? But there's no magnet in CH50Mg.

Just like Hooligan said no need for upgrades necessary.

The brake inserts are spares based on weight, as in any other Shimano reel.

I like the form factor, the speed, weight, and general feel of the reel. I've got half a dozen of them and I am constantly on the lookout for more.

There is just something about these reels.

The drag upgrade is a must on Shimano reels, plus it's a really cheap upgrade.  If you do the tune, send it to someone you trust will do a good job and you will never think about reversing it.  I would probably do bearings too but in reality, getting them properly cleaned will probably be a big upgrade over how they are now.  One other thing I like to do on the older 100 and 50 sized Shimanos is put a Curado E handle on them.  It's longer and has the bigger knobs, that's just personal preference though.

Thanks to everyone for the comments and help. A drag upgrade, cleaning, and possibly a bearing upgrade is the route i am going to take. I worry about the irreversibility of a suoertune.

Luckily there was a misspelling on the auction and I got it for a ridiculous price. It comes with everything a brand new one had. I hope I will enjoy this reel as much you giys have.

Which rod to put it on now?

Nrx 893 blue or green

Nrx 803

Cumulus 7'1" mhxf

A good friend if mine advised to go with the 803 and that is what I am going to do unless theres is s serious advantage on a different rod.

Thank you all for the help and info. Nothing is better than first hand advice.

I am thinking you should go all out on this one! Talking carbon fiber handle, corks knobs, abec7 bearings, supertuning, a carbontex drag, and what the heck, throw in a custom paint job. You only live once!

Good luck with what you chose to do with the reel!

It would balance well with the 803.  As much as I love my Cumulus 7'1", it is a just a little tip-heavy with my Core 51.

I'm glad to hear its getting such good reviews. I've been thinking of going with one too in a few months. Mainly for finesse baits

Thank you....I feel the same way about the Cumulus rod. My curado 200e7 balances it well, but the Cumulus/core color combination is just ridiculous. I love that rod.

Does anybody know offhand when the chronarch' mg's got discontinued. Their resale value is extremely high. It speaks to the quality of Shimano reels. Every Shimano reel I've obtained has been nothing short of exceptional (chronarch 50mg, curado 50e's, curado 200e7's, stradic fj, stradic ci4).

I would like to add at least another Chronarch MG to that list but as hooligan said, they are not easy to find for a reasonable price.

Does anybody konw what the stock bearings on this Chronarch 50mg would be equivalent to using Abec's as a reference point? Just for upgrade investigation purposes.

No sweat Buddy.  Yea, it is an amazing stick.  It was origianlly my dedicated t-rigged Roboworm combo, until I fished the Baby Rage Craw; now I have a Baby Craw, tungsten bullet weight, and sometimes a force bead tied on at all times.

The Chronarch Mg last apperaed in the BPS catalog in 2008.

If you have the funds, do it; it really is a special reel.  I use one for finesse plastics/jigs, and one for small moving baits.

I am another huge fan of the Chronarch 51 Mg. Its a stellar little reel, to say the least.

Nice acquisition.

+1 on the drag upgrade for the reel.  Probably the most beneficial to the 50MG that I've noticed doing.

I would flush the bearings good and dry, add one drop of my favorite light premium bearing oil, install a carbon drag, and call it as good as it get's! Then I would buy that St. Croix you mentioned in your other thread, the 6'10"MXF with that reel would be one bad a$$ finesse rig!!! Top Water, light jigs in deep open water,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and though its not a Lew's Pro Team, its a great real and it would be on one of the best rods on the planet!! I think anyone would be happy to have that outfit in there arsenal!!
