Like to here feedback from the MGX owners out their. I have 2 and think they are fantastic. Was out yesterday at a cooling lake by me, air temp at 22 degrees and just firing casts with the mgx and realized I had been playing with them during the off season. Took a look and I had the cast control turned to the lowest setting and the spool tension so loose the spool was actually rattling when I cast. But I was still able to fire casts as hard as I could. I just can't believe how good these reels are. Just waiting to see if they will stand the test of time. Anyhow, please let me know if any owners out there have any different opinions or if you guys are with me on these thoughts.

Not a fan. I owned 4 of the Gen2 Premier's when the MGX came out. HUGE fan of the Premier's so I wanted the MGX also. But there were a lot of very mixed reviews on the reel when it first came out. The Premier's, rightfully so, had almost universal praise. But the MGX, not so much. So I held off for a while, but finally just had to see for myself. I'm just not a fan of the IVCB braking system compared to the dual brakes in the Premier. I also have Core 50's, Steez's, Calais DC's, Pixy Type-R, Gen 3 STX, Curado 50E, etc reels. I'd rank the MGX at the bottom of those reels. I tried hard to like it, I really did. Put different lines on it, put it on different rods for different techniques. But it just did nothing better, and mostly just not as good, than my other reels, and was hard to get set just right a lot of the time. It now lives below decks as an emergency spare for me.

Glad you like your's, though. Some guys really seem to take to them.

I'm with Jeb. I had terrible luck with mine, breaking several brake pins off, and a spool that was out of round. Be extremely careful with the MGX and having inadequate tension. If the spool can move to the side at all it is very likely you will break or bend the small pin on the spool shaft that aligns with the hollow portion of the shaft assembly. I did it, as have several people I fish with. The MGX is not, in my opinion, worth the money paid.

Forgot to mention I also upgraded the bearings on mine after a couple of months, hoping that would bring it around. Didn't seem to have much impact on it, though. I never had any problems with mine, it just always failed to impress at anything is all.

I like my MGX, but i would take my Gen 2 Premier over it anyday. The MGX is a good reel, i jjustt dont think it is worth the price tag.Of all my reels, the MGX ranks 3rd. My favorite is the Gen 2 Premier, then the Daiwa Lexa 100, and then the MGX. I still cant get over how nice that Lexa is for the price.

I have an MGX/HS on a Falcon Mike McClellan 7'2" MH rod and 10# fc sniper flouro.  I used it to cast 1/8 oz to 3/8oz swim jigs for aver a year now and really like it.  It is my javorite rig.

I've had no problems with the MGX at all, but for $150 less get a Lew's Tournament Pro speed spool....Does the same things and weighs only 1 oz. more... 1 oz. does not = $150 in my book...JMHO

My fishing buddy has a MGX on a Vendetta and I have a Tournament Pro on a Bucoo. The MGX is smooth, crisp and super lightweight, but so is the Tournament Pro. The one ounce really doesn't equate much in the total setup weight even for a light combo. I am not a big fan of the IVCB-IV centrifugal brakes on the MGX. The issues for me about the centrifugal brakes on the MGX are that they are continuous, not adjustable (at least not practically), and that they are relatively weak. In regards to Tournament Pro I love their centrifugal brakes, (they are smooth and definitely even out casts with wind etc.) but I almost wish they would do a reel with a 6 pin "star" configuration. The 4 pin system that Lew's uses is awesome, it will slow a lure down a lot and let you cast in tough conditions, I just feel that a 6 pin would be more versatile.

My view on the MGX is it's a good reel, light weight, smooth, etc. but just worth the extra cost compared to a Tournament Pro.

I'll go with those who class the the MGX as a fine reel but if I had it to do over I'd buy another Lew's Tournament Pro instead. Much cheaper and just maybe a better reel.
