Jake P Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I went through my terminal tackle today and realized that I have way too many styles of hooks. I want to get down to about 4 different hooks for all of my plastic presentations. Standard T rig hook for worms and thinner plastics. I have always used EWG but want to get away from this because the extra wide gap is not needed for these plastics. How many of yall use a standard offset hook? Do you find it better because the hook point is not directly aligned with the eye? Or find no difference at all? Light wire hooks for when I am fishing finesse worms on my ML to M power rods with 6-10# line. EWG for thicker plastics like flukes, creature baits etc. Heavy wire hooks for throwing into the nasty stuff. I know there are many more hooks and I plan on keeping a few others like finesse wide gap hooks for nose hooking flukes or wacky rigging senkos, I just want to simplify my terminal box. I pay so much attention to lures im throwing that I have never stopped to take a look at the hook style Im using and make sure it is the best hook for that particular bait. Do yall use many different hooks? Or keep it simple like I plan on doing and just use a few? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 9, 2013 Global Moderator Posted March 9, 2013 I use EWG superline hooks for most everything but I do have some regular EWG hooks in smaller sizes for finesse baits. I've got some standout hooks for DS, some wide gap finesse hooks for wacky rigs. I did just get some straight shank VMC "Ike approved" HD flipping hooks that I'm going to try this year. I really got them specifically for fishing the new Zman Palmetto bugs but I'll be trying them with my Rage Craws and Pit Bosses also and if I like them I'm sure I'll have more. Quote
Super User Teal Posted March 9, 2013 Super User Posted March 9, 2013 I gues you can say i have alot of different styles of hooks but, i try to be diverse and always have the right hook for the right lure and line weight. Worm hooks -reg EWG - both light and heavy Straight shanks - reg and heavy duty Weighted Swim bait hooks - Reg and heavy duty Drop shot hooks Wacky hooks. I am slowing easing away from using EWGs as much, most of my pitching is going to be done with straight shanks...*im going to see how this goes* Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted March 9, 2013 Super User Posted March 9, 2013 I mostly use 4/0 EWG hooks but occasionally Ill use some standard offset hooks. I also have some 5/0 keel weighted hooks for the rage rig. My thing is I need to work on what hooks are best for which baits/presentations. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted March 10, 2013 Super User Posted March 10, 2013 I use the size and style most appropriate for the application. That means a lot of different hooks and a variety of brands. The most intriguing is the X-Point. Quote

I have made the switch from EWG to straight shanks for flipping/pitching. About the only thing i use a EWG for is flukes. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted March 10, 2013 Super User Posted March 10, 2013 I have too many hooks. Was trying to list them but gave up. Lol Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 10, 2013 Super User Posted March 10, 2013 Worms; Standard size worms, 6" to 16", Texas rigged: Owner 5100 & 5103 and Gamakatsu 011 & 484. Finesse slip shoot, split shot and drop shot; Owner 5133, mosquito and Gamakatsu 504 & wide gap weedless finesse hooks. Creatures; Owner 5191 and Daiichi D46 I don't like off set wide gap hooks for worms and only use that style hook when needed of thick bodied creatures, creatures with worm style body I use worm hooks listed. Sizes depends on the soft plastic diameter, line size and type of cover or structure and the type of rigging. Tom Quote
