Sbennett9 Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Hello Everyone, I'm Brand New to this site and upon looking at it there seems to be very little consistant information for us VA boys. I fish primarily out of a Jon boat in electric motor only locations and am always looking for info on new places or ways to fish here in Virginia! Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Welcome aboard! Lots of VA folks on here. Just a matter of coordinating schedules with people. I know that there is a meet-n-greet on the Potomac at the end of August you might want to consider.... 1 Quote
Sbennett9 Posted March 9, 2013 Author Posted March 9, 2013 Hey thanks for the reply and I will definitely have to consider it. So what kind of bodies of water are you fishing currently? and have you been out yet? Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 10, 2013 Super User Posted March 10, 2013 Us Virginia guys and gals will give you all of our input. Just ask specific questions. I note you are in Northern Virginia and live in Spottsy so you have so many places to fish from Lake Anna and the Potomac down to the Historic James River, the Appomattox, Chick Lake and River and all inbetween. I know you have the latest DG&IF Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet that lists places for public fishing. Check them out. Lots of places that allow a 9.9 or trolling motor, only. And did you attend the Richmond Fishing Expo? It is a must to learn what to throw and where to go. As to where to go in your jon boat? With a 9.9 just about anywhere with the exception of the main Potomac. You can access local Potomac creeks like Aquia but be double careful in a jon boat on the Potomac. Stay in Aquia and fish the docks and piers plus the grass and do not venture out into the main river channel. You can have a good time on One Fish Anna in a jon boat. Just be sure to always check the weather and the winds. And remember the Dogwoods. When they bloom the bass are on their beds. The first full moon after the Dogwoods bloom is excellent, depending on the weather cooperating. So ask your questions; get that degree; get your new Ranger before you get married; start a career; join a local bass club; and pay lots of FICA. We look forward to hearing from you and giving you our input. 2 Quote
Broke bass fisherman Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Welcome to the site. Tons of Va information. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted March 11, 2013 Super User Posted March 11, 2013 Welcome to the forum !!! I am usually fishing the Shennandoah river or Lake Anna, Anna is my primary body of water I enjoy the most, I have fished most all of Va. at some point in time, Gaston, Potomac, Chick and a few smaller bodies of water I have yet to visit, I have not been out yet this year myself but I am looking forward to my first trip of the season sometime soon as well. As you can see Sam is our information guru, and if you ever get the chance to meet him he is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, along with a lot of others on here, Zoff, Quanjig, Endless, AJ, Steve, Traveler, Sam, Are all people of whom I have had the very distinct pleasure of meeting and fishing with, I can't begin to tell you how diverse we are in personality, and how much fun it is getting to know one another here, but we all share the same passion for fishing. Just because we live in Va. does not mean you won't pick up some valuable info from states as far South as Fla, We share a lot here in the South East section, shucks, we even have a couple of Mods that will chime in from time to time that know a tremendous amount about fishing lakes and rivers, there is even a Mod that has fished our waters from up North, so we are very blessed to have not just locals here that can help you, but tons of people that can help you from all over this country, so don't be suprised if someone chimes in from somewhere else that may be able to help us with our ventures on Va. waters. As for consistant info on Va. waters, be more specific and we could most likly be of some better assistance to you, trust me, we are all looking to be better anglers, you may be able to share something we can all learn from and apply to our fishing as well. Again, Welcome to the forum and feel free to ask of any body of water we have here in Va. Good luck and be safe !!! Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Didn't see your reply, so sorry for the delayed response. For me, my primary waters are Sandy River Reservoir and Briery Creek Lake. I also hit up Diascund Creek, Smith Moutain and Lake Anna. I hit afew local ponds when time is short, but once summer gets here I can usually be found around the Eastern Shore and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel chasing some salty species like Summer Flounder, Redfish, Speckled Trout, Spadefish, Sheepsheads and big Croakers. I frequent both fresh and salt and try to stay as well rounded as possible. Quote
Sbennett9 Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 Is anyone out on reservoirs near Fredericksburg or Spotsylvania? My primary fishing area is from there to Fairfax. I havent been able to really find any good shore fishing in Fairfax or nearby so if anyone could help with that I'd greatly appreciate it! Quote
Nubbins1911 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Welcome, Here is a map I copied from KFB it has a few spots near Fairfax https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203038029626466501952.00049e393f53f278c8559&msa=0&ll=38.761044,-77.164536&spn=0.151792,0.338173 I use google maps all the time to look to see if there is anything near where I might be working that day. Sbennett9 Posted March 20, 2013 Author Posted March 20, 2013 That is one awesome map. Is there a way to edit it and add notes? Quote
Nubbins1911 Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 I have tried but no luck but i'm not that skilled with computers Quote
Sbennett9 Posted March 20, 2013 Author Posted March 20, 2013 Yeah I definitely understand that! As a college student I still don't do extremely well with computers so you're not alone. Either way it is a very good thingt o start off with and maybe I can expand it on paper Quote
WDinarte Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 That is one awesome map. Is there a way to edit it and add notes? Yes, it is a way to do it from Google map and you can save you own locations. You will save it for public view or private for you only. BUT you need a google log-in, after I open this link I have like 1 qrt of the window open to my Left and one option for "My places" and under that is " save to my places " if I like to keep this map that I just open. Note: If you don't see that open space with the option for " my places " take a look on top of the computer window, on the top-left corner of the map on this link, it should be a arrow " show panel " click that and will open the panel with the options. ( the single arrow, not the one to move the map up-down-left or right ) Let me know if work ?... sorry for my " INGLES " guys, English is my second Language. I hope help somehow. Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 It is a great tool, but also keep in mind that even your PRIVATE mappings are still public to some extent. I personally would recommend not doing this for your hot spots or fishing reports. There are hoardes of people that do nothing more than troll the web looking for fishing reports in order to make their lives easier on the water. Most of the reports I put out there are very general and don't actually show the hot spot or any specific geographic/topographic hints. Just a suggestion. FWIW, one of my kayak friends even witnessed this in person at BPS. He was looking over some reels at the reel counter when he overheard one of the clerks tell a customer to go to a particular kayak site and read their posts to find some hidden locations. It happens. In reality, there are few unknown or secret honey holes on public waters, but anything you can do to try and minimize burning of your spots helps. Quote
WDinarte Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 X2 - H/yakker, that is the real problem of this tool. Quote
