Hey guys, let me first say that I am trying to get into jig fishing this year. I fish from a dock and am not 100% sure what cover is around it, but I am pretty sure there is some submerged timber and a crappie bed. Do you guys think this is ok for a jig or would I be better off to go to a different lake and shore fish so i can move and find heavy cover? Thanks in advance.

Jigs can be worked anywhere a bass can be found. That is the simplest answer I can give you. Fish it various ways and see what works best. You do not need a certain type of cover, you just need to find bass, then hope they are hungry for some jigs!

I keep 2 lures rigged 24/7/365; a Texas Rig & a Jig-N-Craw ;)

As Jig Meister said a jig is very versatile and can be worked in many different circumstances. I would try a jig in the areas you mentioned. It may not work every time, but usually I do very well in wood cover and around beds with jigs. I always have multiple rigs tied up with jigs and each year my biggest fish usually comes on a jig.

Thanks for the replies. I mainly hear about people throwing jigs into cover and just wanted to make sure it was a good area to use one.I will definitely throw a jig as soon as the weather warms up and I can fish. Thanks again!

My advice is a lighter weight.1/4 to 3/8 oz jig if casting from shore or a dock and use a soft plastic trailer about 3" to 4" long. Fan cast the entire area and take your time.

Other than around snot grass there is not really a bad place to fish a jig.

The only that really limits a jigs effectiveness is the user. Be creative and and when it doubt, slow down and let the jig do the work.

Ive caught fish in 30' of water and 6inches of water on jigs.

Learning to use and trust a jig is a rite of passage in bass fishing IMO. Jigs may not always work best, but it is rare that they won't work at all. What they do really well is catch the bigger fish quite often. Catt could probably catch one on a jig in my wife's goldfish tank.  :respect-059:

As mentioned the reason a jig works in so many many conditions is its versatility. BoatlessB throwing a jig into, over, and around a brush pile intended to hold crappie has won a healthy percentage of tournaments on many lakes. Read everything you can find on jig fishing and just do it! Good luck.
