Newbass112 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 The standard 3 rack tacklebox I have now just does not carry what I need it to. I've been looking at the plano 7771 but there aren't a lot of good photos or videos out there showing a size comparison. I will be carrying it with us in our 14/36 jon boat. For those of you that own one do you like it? Too big? My main baits are soft plastics. I really like having all of the space it has, just don't want something that's going to be way too big to haul around. I can't tell if it's a good size or not. Thanks Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted March 8, 2013 Super User Posted March 8, 2013 I have the 777, which is very similar. I really like it, I mainly fish from my canoe, and it is the perfect size for me, I can use it as a tabletop when closed, and it doesn't take up that much room. It does not have any room for soft plastics though, the top is a crankbait compartment, under that has enough room for terminal tackle and extras like cutters and shades, then mine has 2 double sided boxes for topwaters and jerks, and lastly the spinnerbait box. As far as plastics, I use the Bassmaster bag I was sent free from them for signing up, it's perfect size for a day on the water, just fill it with what you plan on fishing for the day. 1 Quote

The Rooster Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I once had the 777 also, but I found it way too small. I went back to a bag with utility boxes. I used to keep my plastics in a zip up pocket on the side of this bag. Then I went to two pockets. Finally went to a separate bag just for plastics and filled the newly emptied pockets with more utility boxes. In fairness, I'm a tackle junkie and I regularly rendezvous with the bait monkey. Most people never need the amount of tackle I have, not even tournament guys. But I've met some that are FAR worse than me. Saw a boat once heading into a local tournament and they must have had at least 6 or 7 of those extra large plastic boxes similar to the 777 on board. Anyway, if plastics are your main thing then I doubt any suit case style box will do it for you. They're made more for plug style lures than anything else. They're large but I think it's a lot of wasted space. There's room for a little bit of each thing but not a lot of any one type of bait (said the guy who has 45 spinnerbaits and felt restricted to have to carry only 20 or so in my old 777 so take my advice with a grain of salt). I think a tackle bag is the best solution, even for all 45 of my spinnerbaits. They fit in a Plano 3730. Nice and compact and twice the cargo capacity. Saves the outer pockets for plastics (about 30 bags, or more utility boxes for 37 jerkbaits, or 60+ crankbaits, or 80+ roostertails, hey I told you I'm a tackle junkie)! 1 Quote
fstr385 Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I have one. I like it. I also thought about getting a bag like The Rooster said too, but I ended up getting this one better suited for what I use. Hopefully eventually I have both lol This is from when I first transferred boxes, Ive gotten rid of quite a bit of crap I don't use, but probably have 3 times the stuff in there that I had in the other box with room to spare. 1 Quote
The Rooster Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 One thing I just remembered. I had to add thin strips of wood along the back of my box near the hinges for the lid. I fastened them with screws to reinforce the plastic there. The lid weight was too much for it when it was opened and it tried to crack. The lid's top side could have been overloaded with baits........but I wouldn't do that (whistling inconspicuously). 1 Quote
Newbass112 Posted March 9, 2013 Author Posted March 9, 2013 Thanks for the suggestions. I was going to get the 7771 and just take all my soft plastics out of their original bags and organize them in the plano boxes the 7771 comes with. But I'm not sure if I want to do that as they mix scent, certain chemicals take the coloring off and melt the lures by being in the same box so I'm told, and they rust hooks. I then thought of getting a little flambeau t4 or similar and just getting a worm binder for all my soft plastics, but then again that's still taking the plastics out of their original packaging so why not just store them in the plano boxes. Plus I'm not all that sure a binder would hold all my plastics...maybe the brownell goliath would. I like being able to carry all my tackle with me at once even though not neccesary. So the big storage is a plus. Ideally though keeping the soft plastics in their original bags is what I'm told is best. Quote
