Can I Use The Improved Clinch Knot On Braid?

I know I know....dumb question.  But this is my first time using braid and Im having some trouble with the palomar.  Any other braided line knot suggestions would be great.

Braid - double palomar, berkley braid knot, or snell knot for straight shanks.

The berkley braid knot is a good one for your if your already familar with the improved clinch. Double palomar is overkill but ill bend a superline hook before i break it off.

Palomar is one of the strongest PE terminal knots I know... double palomar may slip a little less.    Both are very easy to tie.  Leave 1/2" of tag line when you trim it.

I guess its more of a problem with me rather than the palomar.  Ive just never used it before and Im not so good with knots.  All Ive ever used is Improved Clinch on mono.

Maybe I just have to work at it more.  I tried the Berkley Braid knot and got it right a couple times.  Wanna make sure I get some kind of knot down good.  Don't wanna be losing lures cuz of bad knots.

What do you mean?  Like you go through once and then loop it around and come through again before tying the rest of the knot?

Yep wetting the knot is a must also.

Right on.  And I always wet my knots.  A little lubrication is never a bad thing.

Myy suggestion, get and hook and an old spool of mono. Take it in your house with you and sit down and practice tying knots. When i wanted to learn new knots i did that. Ive been watching tv with the wife for the past month or so while tying a snell knot.... over and over.

I wasnt good at knot tying at first either, but if you sit down and just do it over and over ..you will get it. The palomar, braid knot, and snell knots are good to have in your arsenal. I would also sit down and practice the Albright or Alberto or uni to uni knot. This will allow you to tie leaders onto you mainline. Practice practice practice.

Thats what Ive been doing for the last hour.  Im pretty sure I got the hang of the Palomar now and I got the braid a couple times.  Im just gonna keep at.  Nows the time to learn.  Don't wanna be playing around with it at the lake and wasting valuble fishing time.  For the braid not, what part do you pull to tighten it?  I think thats whats messing me up on that one.

If you're using an old hook to practice with, you might want to take some wire cutters and cut the point off of the hook. This could save some blood if you slip.

To answer the original question, yes you can.  It's the only knot I use.

I USED to use the improve clinch knot with braid but occasionally lost lures because of it.  Switched to the palomar knot for braid and haven't lost a lure since.  Use it.

I use nothing but an improved clinch knot for braid.  Freshwater braided lines are usually 10 and sometimes 15# with 6 wraps before the final loop.  My saltwater inshore gets 10, 15 and 20# depending on the gear I'm using, same formula.  My offshore braid on a couple of set ups is 30#, my max line size, same 6 wraps but the final loop gets a double wrap.  If tied correctly the chances of knot failure are close to nil, if one is concerned about pull thru put a bead on the tag end with a lighter.

Any properly tied fishemen's knot employed with proper drag use should be fine 99% of the time, use what ever is easiest.

Good to know.  Im still gonna try and get proficient with other knots but Im glad I can fall back on the clinch if Im getting frustrated or Im in a hurry.  I just always heard people pushing the palomar for braid so I suppose it made me think the clinch wouldn't work for it.

Braided lines are more about diameter not strength as most of the break well over the number on the package.  If one is using 20# line that breaks at 30#, don't kid yourself, you are using a thin 30# line, which is good.
