BassKing17 Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I am heading out this friday to try my luck on a very good pond. The last time I tried it I had a little bit of success with the Z-man Chatterbait on Braid. I was just going after a reaction bite. The water was extremely CLEAR 15+ feet visibilty. I could see the fish just watching my lure go right by their face in 2-5 feet of water close to the banks on top of heavy moss. i figured out what presentation I am going to try next, The Mojo Rig with a natural color finesse worm or grub. Now i just need some advice on what line to spool on my rig for the extremely clear water conditions. I really don't know the differences between Mono and Fluro.. Should I stay with the green invisibraid and attach a fluro or mono leader? I believe the fish are spawning or are in the shallows about to spawn. The water temp is in the lower 60's and the temperature outside is mid 70's and sunny. I think a texas rigged worm would just penetrate the heavy moss too deep and I would just drag in moss every cast. Thats why I want to try the Mojo Rig. Advice? Thanks, Zack Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 7, 2013 Super User Posted March 7, 2013 Zack, I would stick with your braid and tie on a fluoro leader. You don't have to drop a lot of money for a small spool. Actually, you'd probably be fine with mono, too. Try both! Tie on a leader between 5 and 15 feet and give 'er a go! Quote

HeavyDluxe Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 My impression: Mono - less expensive, a little more refraction in water (a little more visible), stretches Fluoro - more expensive, better refraction in water (a little less visible), no stretch Quote

Both of these lines are inexpensive, and while not perfect, are pretty darn good. 1 Quote

Almost every time I spool up with mono it seems to start twisting and pigtailing.. Quote
thehooligan Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 If your using spinning gear just buy a spool or yozuri hybrid or flouroclear like darren said and tie on a leader. If your fishing baitcasting gear, just spool up the reel, baitcasters handle flouro alot better then spinning reels. Just have to figure out what pound test your comfortable with. I typically use 6-8lb flouro leaders on spinning rods. And my baitcasters get 8-10lb flouro. Quote
HeavyDluxe Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Pretty much, although fluoro does stretch, too. Thanks for that clarification. re: pigtailing for the original poster - ALL lines will twist on spinning gear, even braid (though braid does handle the twists and tangles better). As far as preventing that while spooling the line onto the reel, I personally found this video very helpful and I am sure there are others: Quote

I fell INLOVE with the chronarchs. 1 is on a 7ft Duckett Micro magic Medium Heavy rod and the other a 7ft Skeet reese medium heavy jig rod. Quote

Almost every time I spool up with mono it seems to start twisting and pigtailing.. Braid, for sure. If you have to spool up with mono, fluoro, etc., spray on KVD's line conditioner. But the whole leader thing is you can tie on different pound tests, and different types of line for diff techniques. Tie on a long leader of mono for top water, for instance. Or a 6 lb fluoro for dropshot. And so on. Or, as I do, use the copolymers with fluoro coating or blend for everything. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 7, 2013 Super User Posted March 7, 2013 99% of the time, COVER, not CLARITY determines my line choice. Here's my preferences: Weeds: straight braid. Wood: Braid with a 12-15# CXX leader. Shoals with sparse over and clear water: 12-20# CXX or Fluoro. Deep, rocky cover: 12# CXX. Quote

I went shopping yesterday, Since I will be fishing water with TONS of weeds and Lots of wood structure I decided to keep my 12# invisibraid and I bought a small spool of Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon 10# for a 6' leader. I am the best knot guy, I normally use a improved clinch knot for mono or fluoro but when I use that same knot on braid the line breaks on almost every hook set... Also what knot should i use when tying the fluoro to the Braid? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 8, 2013 Super User Posted March 8, 2013 Palomar or Uni for braid. Braid to leader, Alberto's Knot: http://www.stripersonline.com/a/albertos-knot Quote
BassKing17 Posted March 8, 2013 Author Posted March 8, 2013 I am going to have to practice that Albertos knot. Quote
