WhiteMike1018 Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 What action / tip / and length would you prefer for MOST flipping / pitching applications. NOTE: I live in new Jersey so the cover is not SUPER thick but we do have a fair share of thick cover. I'm thinking of getting a 7"6 MH Veritas casting rod...thoughts? Would like to keep the rod around 100$ price range and it seems Veritas reigns supreme in that price range. Ill be pitching mostly small-medium sized creatures and most likely 3/8 and under sized jigs. I listed some rod types and brands you can vote on in the poll. Any feedback greatly apprecoated -WM ALSO: should the tip be F or EXF? and what about MICRO GUIDES? for this technique Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted March 7, 2013 Super User Posted March 7, 2013 The 7'6 Veritas is a great rod! Quote
OkeechobeeAngler Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I voted for the Rage. Bucoo's are good also. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 If you must stay in that price range i would look at the Shimano Compre 7' 7" MH/XF. There is a seller on eBay who deals them for about $100 shipped new. TW has them for $120 shipped. It is a lot of rod for the $. I have used both Compre and Veritas and prefer Compre. Quote
tstone Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 For what you're wanting to do the 7'6" Veritas will be perfect. Quote
mc6524 Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I'd get a Shimano crucial. IMO the Veritas is too brittle. St. Croix is a great rod, but I'd stick with the Avid... Quote
bassh8er Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I've used the Mojo, Compre and the Veritas. Just my opinion, but I have all new Veritases or Veriti now. Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 What about micro guides for flipping/pitching? Also should the tip be fast or extra fast? Quote

This is the exact rod I was going to suggest. I haven't fished one but they sure do feel nice playing around with them in the store. Quote
thehooligan Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Another rod to look at is the *** ***, TW has them in the $100 range. Everyone seems to be raving about these rods... Quote
BrettD Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 The only flippin rod you listed that I have tried is the mojo and I can say it was horrible heavy in general and extra heavy in the tip. My neighbor got one and hated he gave it to me to try for a weekend I also hated. He sold it like a week later. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 7, 2013 Super User Posted March 7, 2013 Fenwick HMG I just bought a 2nd one. Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 Can anyone tell me if microguides are good for this technique or not? Also should the tip be fast or extra fast? Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 7, 2013 Super User Posted March 7, 2013 I have stayed away from microguides in fear of cottonwood plugging them up. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Can anyone tell me if microguides are good for this technique or not? Also should the tip be fast or extra fast? Both, imo are preferance and your style of fishing. I think the ruling on micro guides is still up in the air at this point. I own 4 rods with micro guides and honestly see no difference other than a slight weight reduction. I flip/punch with a 7' 11" Cumara with micro guides and they are holding up great in this FL slop. As for the tip i prefer XF for flipping and fast or even Mod fast for punching. The XF tip i feel lets me get more accurate flips/pitches since im usually using heavier weights. If you want an all around stick that can handle most styles well i would say a 7' 6" & up in H/F or MH/XF. They will handle very similar.... Quote
BrettD Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Can anyone tell me if microguides are good for this technique or not? Also should the tip be fast or extra fast? I think micro guides are better but not everyone agrees it definitly debatable. I like fast with braid I feel there extra fast isn't needed. Quote
Arv Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Around $100 I really like the Compre's. TW has a telesocpic 7'10 Powell Max on sale for $150 though, so if you're top end is 150, I would also consider that. 1 Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted March 8, 2013 Super User Posted March 8, 2013 What ARV said, if you really want to keep it around $100 I would get the Compre, but I HIGHLY recommend Powell rods, They ant be beaten for under $200 dollars let alone under 150.. Quote
Shoalamfishin Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Falcon Bucoo rods, their ratings are generally fairly soft so go with a Heavy action for sure but the rods are light, strong, sensitive and just plain nice to fish with,.. they handle fish well. Quote

I jumped on this rod with their sale 2 weeks ago, 112$ to my door and it was worth every penny. Haven't gotten to fish it yet with the ice, but messing around with it in the house and outside I like it thus far. 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 8, 2013 Super User Posted March 8, 2013 I like my 7'11" Mojo just fine. I don't find it heavy at all for a nearly 8' rod that is meant to rip bass out of the thickest cover you can find them in. Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted March 8, 2013 Author Posted March 8, 2013 Nice, how many of you are using or would prefer an Xtra fast tip? Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 Someone can answet the question about the tip? XF? or fast? Quote
