FLcentral Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 If you fish a bait all the time you come to know it very well. You cast it more accurately, you know the feel when your working it right and what a light strike feels like. It all adds up to more fish caught. On heavly fished water showing them something different is always worth a shot IMHO. I've caught fish on topwater baits in many locations when the bite on slower presentations was not working. Quote

ColdSVT Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Something else I thought of has to do with building confidence. Has this happened to you ... 1) You go out with the intentions on trying a new technique. Drop Shot, Alabama Rig ... whatever. 2) You do your homework ... how to present it, map study etc. 3) You get to your spot. It's perfect. Textbook even. 4) You begin using that lure. You are thinking about everything you are doing. The cast, how fast you are reeling, how deep it is etc. 5) no luck. You are questioning yourself the whole time, what am I doing wrong?, what am I missing? etc. This can go on for hours. Then your brain begins to shut off. I call it surrendering to "Just fishing" and WHAM you get bit. Your confidence gets a jolt and you are able to repeat it a few more times before you are out of the water. All of a sudden you know how to work that bait to get bit. You begin using it more and more and magically you have a new confidence bait/presentation. Don't you just love fishing ... LOL this exact thing happened to me when i decided i was gonna master useing deep crankbaits one season. now it is rare to see me on the water without a deep crank tied on one of my rigs. infact my first technique specific rod was a crankbait rod lol i had a similar experience when i made myself learn how to fish a jig right i never leave the dock without a 5 or 6XD tied on, or a rapala DT series lol Quote

Super User Hooligan Posted March 9, 2013 Super User Posted March 9, 2013 Confidence baits are those we have confidence in because of the results we have had in the past. Period. It's not a guessing game for us. We are comfortable with the way we work it, how we rig it, and where we put them. In part, our confidence in them forces us to pay closer attention to the bait, and what's going on. The anticipation of getting bit, if you will. I don't believe that they make us slow down, but make our senses more honed. My confidence bait is without a doubt a Northstar Jig with a rage craw trailer. I've caught fish on that combination in 29 states and two provinces under terrible conditions, situations in which no one else was catching fish. Quote
TNBassin' Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 If you believe what Rick Clunn has to say he will say that a bass can sense negative energy that you are projecting. With that being said when you fish a lure you are confident in you are more patient, and thus more positive in your efforts. Sweet bass! Clunn's cigarettes smell funny. Quote
NWI-Bassin' Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I wonder how many guys reading this will go out and buy a bag of pink senkos. Already did on the first day of the bps classic. And pink flukes. They were originally for my 6 year sis but I might try them. Quote

If you don't mind telling. Quote
