Shoop05 Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Hey, so a week after the classic is over, and I was just wondering what everyone thinks of Cliff Pace? He's a quiet guy, but a heck of a hard worker. Im happy for him, and I think he was in shock when he won, and why we didn't see much emotion. Quote
TrapperJ Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 After seeing him on the tv footage in the boat and catching fish, it looks like he actually has a personality, i like him a little more. I was watching it with my wife and she still can't stand him though. ha 1 Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted March 6, 2013 Super User Posted March 6, 2013 From a marketing and tv show perspective it made for a dull ending to an otherwise great performance. You can't knock the guy though ... That kind of shock could cause the kind of numb, lifeless energy coming from him when he won. Quote
Koofy Smacker Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I dont see how you couldnt show emotion. Sad thing is that a lot of people who see him as the winner never look past the emotion that he showed when he won. Everyone on this site is different and we can understand what he really is. Personally I loved Chris Lane as a winner. I think hes a great guy, with a great personality and a great work ethic to go with it. Heck of a fisherman too. Pace just kind of showed that "oh, I won, cool" attitude that didnt sit well with a lot of folks. It will be interesting to see how this year goes for him if sponsors will push him outside the comfort zone in terms of promoting products Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 6, 2013 Super User Posted March 6, 2013 Some would say that Cliff Pace came out of no where to win the classic. My view point is that the man went about his business in a professional manner before, during and after this win. What I really respect the most is that when he finally was crowned the Champion of the Super Bowl of Bass Fishing, he exercised the self discipline to maintain his composure and conduct himself in a fashion that represented himself and the sport admirably. I believe the attached article does a nice job summing this up. A-Jay 2 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted March 6, 2013 Super User Posted March 6, 2013 From a $ point of view, The leagues and sponsors want to see the Yankees or Cowboys in their respective finals, but sometimes you are going to get the Cubs or Lions, it happens... Quote
PABASS Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 They don't call him game face Cliff Pace for nothin.. I still wanted IKE to win however after watching Brandon, that kid can fish I would love to see him win some this year.. Quote

It's unfair but so true. Brandon and Ike are so much more marketable and aren't afraid of the limelight. We would have seen them on every commercial possible if they would have won. Pace ... not so much. There's a reason athletes like Danica Patrick who has yet to win a race is known by more people than 90% of the top 10 racers in NASCAR. She's marketable! Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 6, 2013 Super User Posted March 6, 2013 While Cliff Pace might be boring to some, I would much rather see him show no emotion as opposed to IKE and act like a complete idiot and spit and cuss. I really liked watching Brandon P and Hank Cherry. They showed emotion, but it wasn't over the top. 5 Quote

I guess everyone has to be a loudmouth azz like Ike because it's good TV. Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 HMMM If I ever won--LOOOOOK OUT --Marketable--HMMMM Id be chasing Dave Mercers anorexic ass all over that stage- Beating him with $5.00 foot longs from sub way Quote

However, I understand his game and why he chose to act in that fashion. He had some quality gripes when it came to spectators but I do think he should be more humble to his position. Quote
plumworm Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I think if you went to Bassmaster.com and read Pace's first "blog" you will have a whole new concept of the man. Remarkable. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 6, 2013 Super User Posted March 6, 2013 Some would say that Cliff Pace came out of no where to win the classic. Nowhere? Not really..... 90 B.A.S.S. events fished and he's cashed a check in 66 of those events. (22 times he's finished in the top 10 - that's around a top 10 finish in every 4 events). 1 Quote
PABASS Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Didn't they quote his ability to win like top 6% during the classic airing, plus I know he came second in at least once in another classic.. 1 Quote

HeavyDluxe Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I've only seen clips of this, didn't watch the whole thing streamed or on cable... So, take this comment with more than an average dose of salt. However: All I saw was a man who, rather than grandstand and call attention to himself, conducted himself respectfully while still showing joy. If that's really wrong nowadays, I feel very, very sorry for us. I fear we're becoming a bunch of narcissists feeding the egos of a bunch of other narcissists. I once commented on a kayak fisherman's youtube video (might've been the first comment I ever posted there, actually)... What I appreciated most about his videos was how simple they were and how unassuming he was. No, "*THERE'S* a fish" every hookset, grunting, groaning, or whooping over every fish he pulled in. It was just a guy, fishing. 1 Quote

In a sport that has cocky D bags like Edwin Evers, Skeet Reese, and the child like Iaconelli, I love that he won gracefully and with a little class. He didn't jump around, he didn't dance, he just accepted his trophy, said thanks and that was that. He gained me as a fan that day. 1 Quote
Super User South FLA Posted March 6, 2013 Super User Posted March 6, 2013 If he had a personality like Gerald or Ike then he would be more marketable and make more $$$ through sponsorship, but somehow I don't think that bothers "Cool Hand Cliff!" Quote

They aren't "cocky D Bags". Skeet was more than willing to talk about his experience fishing Lake Okeechobee during his last tournament down here and shared information. Ike actually went out of his way to take pictures and sign a couple of autographs for my son and during weigh-in a couple of years ago and was a pleasure speaking with at iCast in 2010 and 2012 and E3 is more cordial than a Southern gentleman at church. Those guys are great, not saying that all Bassmaster guys are like that, but from my experience most are down to earth guys like you and I. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 6, 2013 Super User Posted March 6, 2013 I really didn't give it a second thought. Interesting comparison to Yankees vs. Cubs, though. It is nice to see classy, quiet dudes win stuff sometimes. Quote

I know with the way Skeet sometimes acts it's due to his "marketability" and he's probably not really like that when the cameras are off. I did lose a little respect for Evers during a MLF episode, when he tried to sling a fish into his stomach to lip it but it hit him and went into the water. He then proceeded to blame the camera man for being too close and gave him a death stare afterwards. Evers messed up and blamed someone else. And Ike....I like him actually as I've stated in other posts. He cracks me up, and I love how he gets under the skin of other competitors. Like I said, I know that most of there personas when the cameras are on aren't necessarily the ones they have when they are off. Quote
Dinky Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 My total unbiased, objective view is that you all (who dislike them) are wrong about all three of those guys-Skeet, Edwin and Ike! LOL! I have actually spent a fill day in the boat with Edwin and Skeet and they could not have been nicer. But the perception on TV can often become the reality and I certainly understand the view some may have of them.. Quote
