brady01 Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Since i will be graduating from high school this May, i was going to ask my parents for maybe a new gun or something like that, but instead i got prices on a guided trip to the Big O and they went for it. Dad called yesterday and booked it for the Sunday after i graduate. We will be going out with Captain Mark Shepard for a full day. I absolutely can not wait. I will definitely post pics when it comes time. Any advice? Quote
Koofy Smacker Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 when are you going? ill be going out on march 18 and 19 Quote
casterus60 Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Me and my father in law had guided Okeechobee trip few years ago.It was january.Weather was as a hell, around 33,34F and windy. So be ready for weather like this.We stoped at channel because big waves on the lake.I caught many bass on jerkbait and cranks. My father in law used minnows. He got few too.Don't worry about tackle, they got everythink you need.Don't forget about snacks and TIP (gas is expensive). And be ready for surprises Enjoy and have fun. Adam Quote
MSAJAA Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I was there in January and fished for one day out of Rowland Martin’s Marina. We had difficult conditions to say the least (20 to 25 mph winds). The best suggestion I have is if you are only fishing for one day is to use live shiners, it is going to be your best bet to make the most of a one day trip. It will be an additional cost but those fish are so "keyed" in on shiners it is unreal. Quote
BradGuenette Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I'm heading out next tuesday! should be a nice change from all the snow we have up here! Quote
BrettD Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Just got back from Lake O about an hour ago it was blowing 20-30 still had a decent day. If your going to bring any of you own tackle leave the finesse stuff at home. Quote
Shane Procell Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Capt. Mark is one of the best on the lake and has lots of tourney experience on Lake O. You'll have the opportunity to fish shiners but in may you won't need it. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted March 7, 2013 Super User Posted March 7, 2013 What many of the Northerners don't realize that although the BIG bass are usually caught here Jan-March, the chances for catching instead of fishing are best a little later since the weather doesn't play as much havoc with the trip. Yes, there are many parts of the Lake that shelter you from the conditions, but EVERYONE is going to be there especially during the weekend. My favorite time is just about now through the Summer months when the HOT weather keeps even locals off the lake. Enjoy your trip while you are down, shoot me a PM and maybe I can take you out also. brady01 Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 I will be out on may26th. I plan on fishing artificial because that's just what I prefer. I do plan on taking my own rods and reels just for preference but I'm not dead set on it. Thanks for all the advice. Quote

South Florida speaks the truth, March through June are also my favorite months, and don't think their done spawning, iv seen some of the biggest and best spawns in May. And they start feasting on bream. Sam Griffin the maker of the famous Sam Griffin top water lures told me years ago that the Northerns leave right when the fishing gets the best. Quote

I was kinda nervous as fishing slows down here around that time but I've been told that it will be awesome on the O. Another question, is Water Skiing and Wake boarding popular on Okeechobee? Because ill be there memorial day weekend and if its anything like it is here, you don't want to be on the lake. I don't figure it is because Okeechobee is so shallow.... Quote
BrettD Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I have never seen a skiier or wake boarder on the lake. My favorite time to fish is April-June. I have caught spawning females as late as June this fish was caught on 6-11 last year and look at the belly its also the size of the head for how short the fish is It looks like it has some killer genetics It will probaby be a huge fish in a few years. salmicropterus Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean exactly by "finesse" and what would you suggest is best to use this weekend? (Clewiston area) Generally speaking "finesse" refers to light line and smaller lures. The smaller lures like flukes, trick worms etc can work but because of the vegetation you fish, braid or very strong floro (15-20#) is recommended for down here. Popular baits are your skinny dipper type baits, senkos, 10" worms, other types of swimbaits like hollow body, Toads or frogs fished over grass and mats. Natural colors. Quote
