How Heavy Is Too Heavy For Flipping?

My lake gets completely saturated with weed in mid summer. The area is full of bass tho. The spot is large but its only around 2-4 feet deep and its covered from top to bottom with these thick weeds. Is it too heavy to flip? I have never tried. I just go else where. It's the kinda thing where if you cast in, the lure wont do much because of how thick it is. You would basically be dragging it through weeds.

 

What are your thoughts?

Throw a punching rig, heavy weights 1oz+, punch skirt, straight shank hook, craw of your choice, heavy line 65lb-80lb braid, and a heavy stick rated for atleast 1oz+.

I use a Dobyns dx795 flip for this technique, paired with a Curado 201dhsv.

i'd throw a 3/4 -1 oz weight on 60 pound braid with good heavy jig or flipping rod and a strike king rage craw or rodent on a flipping hook that's a deadly combo for me in think grass.

You would be suprised on how thick of grass I have caught fish in its suprised me a few times even. My punching rig is a dobyns 766 with 65# braid with a 2 oz tungsten weight. Also alot of time the grass on the surface is thicker at the surface and makes a canopy with an opening under it.

1 ounce may not be enough weight for the real thick stuff--1.5 to 2.0 (tungsten) might be needed.

Your talking my favorite way to fish now! I use a large size bobber stop, anywere from a 1 - 2oz tungsten weight, punch skirt, punch hook and either a sweet beaver or a D&M punch craw. At least 65lb braid with a snell knot. I throw it all on a 7' 11" new series Cumara H/XF and a G3 Revo SX HS reel. I rub the rig down with some Megastrike attractant as well. They don't always come out of that stuff but it sure is fun  trying to get em out!

You would be amazed at the amount of fish caught up here in NY that come out of the thickest crap you can think of that has blown up against dock corners and walls.  You need at least 1.25 oz of tungsten, and you may be fishing in a foot of water, thick grass all the way to the bottom.

I recently watched a episode of Hook n Look where they showed matts and heavy cover fishing.  Really good show, it showed how much light actually penetrates the heavy matts.  They also talked about different types of cover and where the fish will be.  Got to have a good trolling motor to get in and get those fish out if you can't haul em out.

I have done some flipping in the past but it's in lilly pads, down trees, ect. Never anything like this. I always say, "dammit, I know there's fish in there but it;s too thick!" then go find another area or fish the very edges of the weeds.

I could be wrong, but did you say it was grass all the way to the bottom? If there's open water up under it, fish it. But Im not so sure if it's matted grass all the way to the bottom.
