Super User Gone_Phishin Posted July 29, 2013 Author Super User Posted July 29, 2013 Gorman Thomas and Ben Oglive are not walking thru that door...  Stormin' Gorman was one of my favorites as a kid. Cecil Cooper too.  I recall a game a few years ago, I was watching it on TV. Well Thomas did a quick cameo and he was TANKED...I mean blotto hammered. Ruggino has no business, they guy can't hit his way out of a wet paper bag. He wouldn't be in the bigs if the Jackass owners didn't trade all the major leaguers out of town and he won't pick up balls. Jeeze man, the athetes these day are primadonnas from day one, kinda sound like these college kids going for hoops or football scholarships. I side with tino, aint nothing wrong with what he did, you ask nice and they don't listen, then you tell them how it is. Like this coming through the ranks in my industry. Get a grip kids. 1 Quote

That trade would set up the sox for a nice run of the next 2-3 seasons. Lee, a healthy Bullfrog Bucholz nastiest 1-2 in the AL, Lackey is back on track and a solid then Lester and Dumpster that is the most legit 5 man out there. Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted July 30, 2013 Super User Posted July 30, 2013 I really like Lee and having him, Hamels (who i know is having a down year but really hasn't pitched that bad) and the emerging Kendrick gives them a solid starter foundation for a few years.  They will need some infielders depending on the Howard health issue and if they re-sign Utley, which i think they will.   Amaro has neglected the offense and was managing the players like Charlie, a little to sentimental and buddy buddy hoping they will regain their form.  Players get old and he has never found a good third baseman and had a great OF in the making but sold off even though i still don't think they are that far away.  They can't score runs, period.  Their bullpen is all aces one day and home run derby the next.  I think Lee has the whole no trade deal going so who knows if he would agree.  I also thin part of the reason he went back to Philly was one of his kids has some sort of medical issue and CHOP is one of if not the best children's hospital in the country.  I could be totally wrong on that one though as people come and leave from philly so often it can be hard to keep it all straight sometimes  Now the angry fan in me says trade everyone and start over.  Take whatever you can get and start rebuilding by either acquiring tons of minor league prospects or established younger players via free agency, either way it will be hard to pay for the MLB package the next few years watching them flounder in mediocrity..... 2 Quote
Super User MCS Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 I like lee a lot too but reality is I dunno if they will be competitive again while he is under contract and get the most value while he is having an excellent value. Papelbon and Adams can hit the road too. Dead weight IMO. U are exactly right, they need a 2nd baseman, 3rd baseman and while I love jimmy he is getting old. Revere, brown and Mayberry isn't a bad OF, Ruf if he turns out at 1b and they need a decent catcher. Their starting staff isn't bad even without lee they have a solid 3 starters and a few young wildcards. I say trade now. Trade trade trade. It eventually paid off for the O's they got Jones out of the sherril(I know who? Right) deal. Davis as a trade for uehara I think. So trade now so they get better sooner. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 It is tough though to move on from guys like Howard, Rollins and Utley who are all homegrown talent and all came up pretty much the same time with Jimmy being hte elder statesmen. Â I still think he is an above average SS with some knack for hitting in big spots and he still has a cannon for an arm. Â Personally i have never been a huge Utley fan. Â He works hard and plays hard but his fielding is average at best. Â Just something about him. Â They also have a pretty good catcher in the minors, last name is Josephs i believe who came over from san fran in the pence trade. Â Â I am curious to see what happens with Halladay at the end of the season. Â if he comes back this year and pitches well and is a free agent wonder who will pick him up....part of me thinks he goes back to toronto. Quote

I don't want them to get rid of Rollins the most of the 3, but he is getting old, get some talent in the minors and plan though. But if there truly is a catcher in the minors, then they should focus on 3 base. They need a manny machado or evan longoria/zimmerman......I am good with howard and utley for another 2-5 yrs but scared of the durability. Put ruf in left and mayberry on the bench....solid team Quote

Remember, other than this recent run of success the phillies had one flash in the plan which ended up being the most memorable WS loss back in 1993 and weren't relevant since the early 80's. And don't get me started on all the other sports....city of faithful fans and loser teams Quote

O's vs. Phils...ED_DIE ED_DIE chants....see the Phils IMO had 93 a WS apperance, then the world series in 2008 and an apperance again in 09 coupled with a solid run atop the NL east really until last year but they came back at the end. So baseball wise, the O's suck worse because 89 was a disastor and 96/97 they didn't make it to a WS....Now football yeah you guys might as well put the paper bags on this year too LOL I know Baltimore since the ravens have has a good run with very few rebuilding years. That I won't touch. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 I guess it is more the disappointment.  Teams that are always good but never good enough to win it all or run into some super hot team that ends up running the table or a team that is a confirmed cheater ends up beating them in the superbowl.  I do wonder how the Eagles will do this year since it already seems like the league is stepping in and trying to slow them down without them even playing a snap yet.  The sixers are the most dysfunctional though....owned by a cable company for a while now will smith is part owner and they still don't even have a coach.  Such a far cry from the great teams in the late 60's to the early 80's and the near misses in the 90's with Sir Charles. Super User flyfisher Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 here we go...and McNabb didn't puke either Were the patriots confirmed as cheaters or not?   And McNabb puking or not puking had nothing to do with them winning or losing.  And anyone who has played a sport and any level other than peewee league has seen or has puked while playing.  It happens when you are over exerting and potentially dehydrated and take in to many fluids at one time  I had a guy on my college basketball team who would puke pretty much every game from nerves.  But since i don't want to totally derail the baseball thread i will stop here....maybe  Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 Confirmed after the philly game and fined and pretty strong evidence for them also taping the walkthrough for their first super bowl win against the rams so it isn't to much of a stretch to say that they were cheating the entire time not to mention their disparity of home wins versus road wins is pretty huge and the same coaches weer there for the majority of that same time frame.. Â Ok, i'll stop now as painful as it is to know the one superbowl i remember watching with the eagles was potentially lost to a team that is a confirmed cheater even though they could have won even with the extenuating circumstances. Super User Jigfishn10 Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 Geez, now you're hanging your hat on speculation that its not too much of a stretch that it could have happened after that....time to take the binky out of your mouth and the 2004 Eagles footy pajamas off. Super User deaknh03 Posted July 31, 2013 Super User Posted July 31, 2013 I remember watching the 1981 super bowl, I was rooting for the Raiders.
