I recently acquired a variety of new hard baits without split rings. The lures are Jitterbug, Spook,

PopMax and Sammy. Kinda covers the spectrum in terms of cost. Most, if not all, of my hardbaits

have split rings. Is this the new trend? Are split rings "out"?

From a marketing standpoint I bet they think if one hook goes bad or breaks the consumer could buy a whole new lure, which might be the case, but people that visit forums like this have a better sense to look up or even ask how to fix an issue like that.

Tom I think he is talking about the attachment eye not the hook hangers.

Correct, attachment split rings.

I am not opposed to putting on my own, but the fact that a wide range of brand new

lures do not come with split rings intrigues me. Perhaps not necessary for optimal

performance? The PopMax are particularly interesting.

I saw spooks and jitters, didnt know they use to have attachment spilt rings, I don't spend big money on Sammy's so I don't know about them

Jitterbugs and poppers work best with no split ring.  I use a split ring or Duo-Loc snap for spook type baits.

I think lure makers are taking a page out of the airlines book  'How to cut costs and improve your profits"  Between labor and the cost of that ring multiplied by 100K baits in each style they've got to be saving big bucks.  Besides, it's not like you or I are not going to buy the product. Heck, we pay more for the name, not the workmanship or the finished product.

I smell a conspirisy involving the split-ring and lure makers.

Jitterbugs and poppers have NEVER had split rings, lol.  It's about functionality. They work better without.

Roadwarrior, what box is that? Looks like a good idea that you can angle the dividers. I think they don't include a split ring because I've heard you get the best action with a loop knot from topwater lures

I always take the split rings off of topwaters that come with them.  I like to tie loop knots on poppers and walkers, it gives them more action and allows them to walk easier.  I suppose snaps would do the same thing, I just don't like snaps.  FWIW, I put oval split rings on all my crankbaits that come with round ones, I never have to worry about tying in the gap.

On the Pop Max, I've never seen one that does have a ring.  There are baits, including a large number of walking baits and topwater lures, that a direct tie is optimal.

I like that box also x2 I think I might have to buy a few :)

Also my pops dont have splits either. Like they say, certain lures need splits to work there magic, while other dont. If you look at a speed clip certain lures will work the same using a speed clip without it, while others will not work with a speed clip. A split ring is like the same concept. What I would do is try it with the ring on one day fishing. Perhaps it makes the lure more alive and that the company is just trying to save?

On lures that have a split ring, can't you just tie to the same loop that the split ring itself is on, and bypass the split ring this way, to achieve the effect of not having it on there? Or would the split ring being loose next to the knot maybe cause it to fail somehow, especially since the gapped part might hook the line and fray it?
