jenga Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 I am coming out to fish the Potomac from michigan to fish with my cousins. I have a 20ft skeeter and plan on fishing mattawoman creek area as we are camping near there. We are planning on fishing from Apr. 4-7 and was wondering if I could get some info about this area. Thanks,Jenga Quote
basser89 Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 Hey jenga, I wish I could give you some insight but I haven't fished that area. What I did want to let you know that IF you don't get any responses on this thread, check out the MD Who's Who thread. There are a few anglers on there that do fish that part of the Potomac and I'm sure they would be willing to help you out! Quote
Super User Munkin Posted March 4, 2013 Super User Posted March 4, 2013 Bring rattletraps and expect a lot of company. Allen Quote
nastynate Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 X2 on the rattle trap. Bring along some chatter baits. My girlfriends father and brothers fish out of Smallwood all the time. Don't forget it is a tidal system and planing the tides can play in your favor. Quote
Traveler2586 Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Suggestions to consider: They like any moving bait as long as it’s white or chartreuse. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, chatterbaits, buzzbaits, and jigs work well. Sexy Shad color is an option. Outside creek bends with wood, and where wood & weed meet are outstanding. Pick one out and fish it. Top-waters can work great early & late in the day. And remember the Dogwoods. When the Dogwood trees bloom the bass are on their beds. Here’s a very good link about fishing the Mattawoman: http://www.penrodsguides.com/articles/mattawomancreek.htm If you plan on leaving the Matt try this link for some good articles: http://www.potomacbass.com/ Look to the left for a box that says "Potomac Tours:" Quote
jenga Posted March 5, 2013 Author Posted March 5, 2013 Thanks guys. Sounds like many of the baits that work here in MI also will work out there. I have plenty of sexy shad lures. How is the timing for this area, ice will be here in MI still so I can't wait. Jenga Quote

nastynate Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Last year in the mattawoman. I was throwing a 1/4 oz. lavender red eye shad and retrieving it right on the top of what ever foliage that was under the water. I don't know what type it was because it was my first time there. We were fishing the first week of April. I was making the cast as long as I could and retrieving the bait as fast as I could ripping the bait threw the top of the foliage. I believe Allen when he says 50+ a day. Wen we would get set op off the foliage it was about every othe cast I would hook up. My girl friend actually caught the biggest one of the day but it was caught on a custome chatter bait her brother made to resemble a sunny. It was also a very windy day not sure if that had anything to do with the bite. We also flipped the pads that were there and picked up a few. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted March 5, 2013 Super User Posted March 5, 2013 WOW, what rattletraps do you use!? Original rattletraps, color didn't matter as much as weight. Those days they wanted 1/2oz or maybe 5/8oz but nothing lighter or heavier. Allen Quote
jenga Posted March 5, 2013 Author Posted March 5, 2013 Man hopefully we time it right. I can't wait if any of you see a black and red skeeter with a power pole stop and say hi. Jenga Quote
