gripnrip Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 I cut my teeth on crappie and cat fishing. I never knew what a bass was until the mid 80's. At the ripe old age of 9 or 10, I was at an uncles house in north Tulsa. I was sitting on the couch surfing the tube. Being a young man, it wound up on some sports channel. Guess what was on? Yup! The Bassmaster show. I sat there glued to the TV. I dreamed of one day fishing tournaments. Fast forward 4 or 5 years. I received a spinning combo from a girl friend at the time. I had heard from my buds at school about what I needed to catch a bass. So I struck out with combo in one hand. A pack of berkley power worms in the other. I headed to a pond not far from my house. A storm was rolling in from the west as I started fishing. I caught my first bass. A nice chunky 2 pounder. I went on to catch many more in the next 30 minutes. The one I remember the most, was the one that got away. I tossed my worm next to a single standing tree in the water. I felt the tap instantly. I set the hook. The rod bowed and I had hooked a monster! The fish, tail walks and spits the hook. I just sat down wide eyed and replayed what just happened. My heart felt like it was going to explode. From that point I had the bug. It was everything about bass! It got so bad as I got older, a bud and I would fish in between our 2 a day practices in the 90 to 100 degree heat. That was just how my insanity started in what I call an addiction today. When BASS announced it was bringing the Classic to Tulsa, I flipped. It has consumed me. Here are some pictures through my eyes. Even though it's a little blurry I thought it was cool. KVD talking to the crowd. Mike relaxed before game time. The one and only Mr. Overstreet. Lined up at the dock. Brandon talking strategy. KVD being interviewed in the background. I have no words. The champ Cliff Pace. He just doesn't know it yet. Ike. KVD. The Line at the BOK My Sooners being crowned college classic champs! National Anthem Ike A champion is crowned. I have more pictures in my gallery that I didn't post. Enjoy! 1 Quote
Dinky Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 gripnrip, Great photos! Man was it cold! I was born and raised in the Tulsa area but moved away in 1986 --I also was thrilled when they announced Grand Lake as the classic site. I have been back to Tulsa quite a bit since '86-still have family there-but have only fished Tenkiller a couple of times with a friend who lives in Broken Arrow. I was really surprised at the quality and quantity of smallies in Tenkiller--they were not stocked there when I lived in Oklahoma. We also used to fish Eucha, Spavinaw, and we would take road trip to Broken Bow every year. Here are a few pics I took-more on my gallery. Quote
