CC268 Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 Hey guys I just picked up a nice baitcaster combo and have been practicing in the yard with a practice plug...doing really good...not hard at all like I thought it was. Anyways...I just noticed there was a good amount of line twist and was wondering if I should tie my line directly to my lures or start using some barrel swivels and a leader? Quote
Michael DiNardo Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 I don't understand how this is happening to you. When you put the line on the reel did you lay the spool on it's side like you would if it was a spinning reel? Mike Quote

Was this baitcaster pre-spooled? Or did you do it yourself? If prespooled, I'd suggest buying some line yourself and spooling it on - or if you bought it at a BPS, take it in, buy some line and they'll spool it on for you. Quote
200racing Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 is your practice plug possibly spinning on the grass as you reel it in? might put a snap swivel on the plug. i wouldn't put it to far up the line as that makes casting harder.. and i wouldnt put one on for real fishing. 2 Quote

I bet this is your problem. My practice plug spins and bounces around the grass and asphalt when i cast down the street quite a bit. Does line twist really matter on a baitcaster like it does on spinning reels? Quote

Does line twist really matter on a baitcaster like it does on spinning reels? I used to practice cast on asphalt when I first started fishing. I soon learned this tears up your line something fierce. Sometimes tall grass can do it, too. Grass blades have sharp or rough edges. Murder on fluorocarbon line. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 3, 2013 Super User Posted March 3, 2013 There is a difference what a practice lure is doing on land as compared to a lure moving in the water, I wouldn't be overly concerned. Line twist can occur on b/c equipment too, 2 examples would be lures that constantly rotate and spin a lot and drift fishing where cut bait is turning by the action of the drift. Both barrel and crane swivels will turn in your hand but in water they spin very little, pretty much being just a line connector. Ball bearing swivels do a much better job, they aren't perfect either, the best thing I have found is using a ball chain swivel. I understand they are very popular on the west coast for salmon and I make lures using them here in Florida. I recently purchased some from this supplier. http://sales.sidedrifter.com/Ball-Chain-Swivels-10-Pack_p_277.html Quote

You betcha it does. I started fishing soft jerk baits this year after watching Bassresource's video on it. Neglected to use a swivel. I seriously thought my Revo S just went belly up. Backlashed every cast. I had micro guides so it was even worse. Had a buddy tell me what I was doing wrong. Stripped the line, used a barrel swivel and no more twist. To the OP, I had thick Bermuda grass. Every bait I throw on the grass in practice, twists up really good. Throw on a barrel swivel and strip the line. Chances are its compromised. 1 Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted March 3, 2013 Super User Posted March 3, 2013 Like most everyone said, it's practicing in the grass. I've never had a real problem with line twist, not that it doesn't happen, but it's not something I'm concerned about it. I never use a swivel on casting gear for stick baits, only Carolina rigs. Even with spinning gear, which I use quiet a bit, I don't let it affect me. I personally think the key is having the line tight in the spool, with spinning gear anyway. Quote
0119 Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 I get alot of line twist from topwater plugs when retrieving a lure back to the boat quickly for the next shot. Same thing with flukes. I also got alot of line twist when respooling using a home made spooling station I made. I learned that you have to have the reel and bulk spool further apart when lining up a reel. I havent found any solution in using a bb swivel when fluking. It doesnt negate the fluke from twirling when you reel fast back to the boat. Quote
