TheKingFisher Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 I've seen a few guys posting about famous people they've met during Classic or other events recently and thought it would be cool for everyone to chime in with their own celebrity sightings past or present, fishing related or not. So who have you met or who would you like to meet? I'll start, first I grew up in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles in the 70's/80's so sorry no fishing idols. No pictures but, I met Muhammad Ali when I was little. He was sitting outside some restaurant in Los Angeles in a convertible Rolls Royce and my parents had me run up and get his autograph. Didn't mean much at the time cause I was fairly young but as an adult now I reflect back on it with a certain amount of awe and appreciation. I saw him again in a restaurant not long after graduating high school and it was kind of sad for me to see him in the state he was in. I sure in the hell wish I knew where that autograph was! As for who I'd like to meet... I grew up with the Showtime Lakers and my favorite all time Laker is "Big Game" James Worthy. The reason, he and my father share the same name. That's mine. Who's next? Feel free to post pics if you have them! 1 Quote

Jake P Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 met John Travolta at P.F Changs in Grapevine a few years ago. My wife was working there at the time and I was going to pick her up along with some to go food around 9:30 at night. DFW airport is right accross the highway and Travolta was in town on some flying exercise. I went inside to grab the food and He was standing there with 2 other men just hanging out. My wife told me he had forgot his credit card earlier and came back to get it. While my wife was getting it from the safe, I was sitting there with our son who was about 10 months at the time. Travolta walked up and stuck his arms out, gesturing that he wanted to hold my son. I stared at him for a minute and thought to myself, normally If I dont know you, you aint even touching my kid. But this IS TRAVOLTA, I mean whats he going to do? So I handed him my son and talked with him for a good 15 minutes while he played and made my son laugh. He was extremely laid back and friendly. Asked how I was doing and everything. It was shortly after he had lost his son Jet, and he had his twins on the way. He offered to take a picture with us after my wife gave him back his credit card. I didnt bother to ask because Im sure he gets hounded all the time and I didnt want to be "that guy". I will see if I can find the pic of him, my son and I. Other than that I have met Garth Brooks, Randy Travis, Clint Black and Charlie Pride. All were at Billy Bobs back when my Dad used to play there. EDIT: Found the pic- 1 Quote

That man's desire to win was second to none. Did a lot of great things for the game, despite being seen as a villain. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 3, 2013 Super User Posted March 3, 2013 Went to high school with NHRA great Tony Schumacher. He was dating my best friend. We used to go to high school drag night at Great Lakes Drag Strip. He was running a '68 pro street Chevelle in the low 10's at the age of 17. In the early 90's I worked with Ken Utterback the lead guitarist of PG&E http://youtu.be/UiZg82R89Qc I met MMA fighter Andrei Arlovski at a Taco Bell in the suburbs of Chicago. I met legendary porn star Seka at a blues bar in Chicago when she was waaaaay past her prime. Same bar different day I met John Entwistle and Zak Starkey. Have also met Buddy Guy I met and spoke with Ike a few years ago at a local fishing show. 1 Quote
gripnrip Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 The most famous IMO, Garth Brooks. My sister was BF with his ex wife in high school. I have autographed tickets and pictures. My mother catered his ex in-laws anniversary vowel renewal ceremony. He also sang at the ceremony, which only the people there got to witness. I met him the day of the rehearsal. He was playing with his youngest daughter, she was about 2 at the time. I had casual conversation with him. What impressed me the most was the day of the ceremony. After they were done, he came back to the kitchen in a tux and said "How are you today Darin?" The fact that he remembered my name says a lot about him. I see him and Trish all over our community. I live approximately 7 miles from him. A class act. As far as anglers. There aren't many that I haven't met or have a pic with. I received some personal instruction from Rick Clunn this past Sunday at the Classic Expo. That was cool. The other one that just stands out is The Big Show from the WWE. That guys is a stinking MONSTER. When I shook his hand I couldn't even see mine! 1 Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted March 3, 2013 Super User Posted March 3, 2013 I have met Glenn, Keri, RW, 00Mod, and about a thousand other people. In my book they are/were all celebrities - except that soldier in Nigeria who stuck an AK-47 in my belly. 4 Quote

Super User slonezp Posted March 3, 2013 Super User Posted March 3, 2013 Almost forgot. Jim Peterik the lead singer from Survivor (Eye of the Tiger - Rocky 3 theme song) played at a wedding I attended in the early 90's 1 Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 Amahd Rashad, Dan Fouts, Al Fuerbach, Neil Steinhaur, Mac Wilkins, Steve Prefontaine, and a couple of dozen world and national track and field record holders. I've met a couple of dozen world and national champion motocross racers. I did meet James Brown in the LA airport but that was no big deal. I got to hold the very first pair of Nike track shoes used in an event and worn by Ivory Crockette. Who'd a thunk it. Stupid little swoosh. Does Stan Fagerstrom count as famous? 1 Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 Oh yeah, forgot to mention James Brown from Fox Sports, along with Tim Ryan (Sirius NFL/former Bears DT), Pat Kirwan, Romeo Crenel, Cliff Branch, Wade Phillips, Scott Pioli, Todd Haley, Rob Ryan..... 1 Quote

Uh flippin and pitchin, I'm going to need a little clarification here. Which James Brown? Please tell me you didn't meet the Godfather of Soul and that it was no big deal? If so I think the following emoticon is appropriate. 1 Quote

Super User retiredbosn Posted March 3, 2013 Super User Posted March 3, 2013 I met Lee Greenwood on an flight to CA, it threw me off because he was sitting in coach right behind me. He was playing in Las Vegas that week. Met Tim Mc Graw at the Wild Horse Saloon in Nashville. I went up to the bar to get a beer, he was sitting there drinking a Bud and I honestly paid no attention him at first. I ordered my beer turned to see what was going on the dance floor, I said something stupid like you look allot like Tim McGraw, he replied that he should since he was I got to talk for a few minutes, seemed like a nice guy. Met Hank Parker at our church, he was there to speak. The church was having a special event and he was the keynote speaker. He signed autographs and spent quite a bit of time just mingling and talking to everyone after. Finally I went to school with Vernell "Bimbo" Coles. He was starting guard for Miami Heat and later Golden State, and also an Olympic athlete, don't remember if the USA won a medal for basketball in 88. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted March 3, 2013 Super User Posted March 3, 2013 I guess I'm also a member of the old farts club. I don't understand the celebrity thing either. You say hi, shake their hand, and maybe have a bit of a conversation. By the next day, if not sooner, they won't even remember meeting you. I remember most if not all of the folks I've met at the road trips. I suspect most of them remember me too, though not necessarily for good reasons. I'm not sure if I should be insulted because I'm not on Long Mike's list, though we have met, and the first thing he did at Pickwick was to take me on a guided tour of his Fort Knox security system on his aluminum baby.
