Did you ever buy a technique specific rod, and then wind up using it more for something other than what it was designed for?

Yeah i did. My first real flippin stick was a Castaway Skeleton 7'6 Heavy (slow action) Casttaway calls it a slow action but really its between a mod and a mod fast. It was made for braided line.

I used it as a flippin stick for jigs and heavy t rigs for one season and then decided to buy a Powell Flippin stick so i would have two big ol broom handles on the boat. Since then i bought a couple more powell flippin sticks.

The castaway, is my Football jig, C-rig, Big Trap, Big Spoon rod. The majority of time i use it for 3/4 Football jigs. It seems to be the best overall rod I have for Footballs and c rigs. The slower taper is awesome for the 3/4 oz traps and spoons too.

I also have a castaway 6'6M that was bought for topwaters, but ended up being my dock skipping rod because it has just the right flex and bend and makes shoooting 3/8 oz jigs or even weightless brushhogs under docks so easy.

Those rods were bought years ago when Castaway first came out with them and even tho i replaced most of my stuffwith Powells and what not, they do so well i cant bring myself to replace them

I have a Lamiglas Don Iovino 6'2" ML that was made for doodling suspended fish. It's great for that technique, but it's also my go to rod for baby topwaters and slabs. Paired with a TD Sol, it's plain money!

I have a 7' MH/fast Mojo which is the Spinnerbait model.

I have thrown and caught with Spinnerbaits on it but I hardly throw Spinnerbaits (gasp, I know).

Now I use it more as a weeds/pads rod with a variety of other baits from Jigs to Texas and Rage rigged baits to Frogs. I haven't had any issues using it in this regard.

I went to the store with the intent to buy a Crankbait rod but instead I purchased a Shimano Convergence Jig and Worm rod (7'2"/Med/Fast).

Even though it's rated for lures up to 1/4 oz I was throwing 1/2 oz baits easily when I went out to test it.  Then I tried it out for it's intended purpose of jigs and worms. I like it better in that capacity than I did throwing the cranks.

I think I'll keep it but still go back to the store to get the Crankbait model, which was my intent to begin with.

Yeah - every so often.   My most successful conversion was a 7'4"  BPS Extreme rod.   I got one because I saw Woo Davis at a seminar, and he mentioned he had just designed this rod for BPS and it was now his favorite pitching rod.  At this point in time, split grip rods weren't common.

So I got one.  I didn't like the handle and I thought it had too much tip to be a decent pitching rod.  Just didn't like it for pitching.   Anyway got to thinking after a while, and  I got a large roll of handle bar tape, like you'd use on a bicycle or a tennis racket.  I rolled it on and after a few tries, ended up with a grip that fit my hand really well, I adjusted the taper quite a bit.   I needed a square bill rod at the time, so that is what I tried first.   Turns out it is a great square bill rod/ an overall good crank bait rod really.   When I saw them on sale for $60, I bought a couple more.   They still suck as a pitching rod, as far as I'm concerned.

One in particular comes to mind: Lamiglas SR705R.

This is THE BOMB for deep diving crankbaits. I have found it to be the perfect rod for casting The Rig.
