Super User Teal Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 Just read a report on ESPN that Balitmore Ravens QB agreed to a 6year, 120.6 million dollar contracts with the Baltimore Ravens. They are working through the weekend to work out details to get it signed. So, i guess you guys with teams looking for a QB can give up on your hopes of Flacco making it to free agency. Flacco will be the highest paid player in the NFL... http://m.espn.go.com/nfl/story?storyId=9006059 Quote

Maybe I'm being too hard on him. If the Ravens felt he was worth it, who am I to argue.  Now if the Bills somehow got him, I might be able to forgive the high cost. But we got Super Mario for a $120 mil!!  1 Quote
Super User Root beer Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 Ray Lewis might rob him... 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 Dude called his shot and won....they wanted to sign him before the season and he rolled the dice and said let's see what happens and then he has a historic playoff run. Congrats to him and like I always say nobody is overpaid because someone thought they were worth what they are paying, now overvalued is a different story 1 Quote
Super User tomustang Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 Glad it worked out for him, lot of people thought he was useless but he panned out Quote
Super User MCS Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 Wow. Great, now how are the ravens going to afford people to block for him. http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/bal-ravens-joe-flacco-agree-to-terms-new-contract-0301,0,2214336.story Read the story, Kruger, Ellerbe, Williams and Reed will probably not be signed. Which is what I feared. Joe deffinately ain't no Johnny U, or Drew Brees for that matter. He is good, better than 2/3 of qbs in the league but not proven elite. most wins since 2008 but def is a credit, a very good rb and playing every game are factors in addition to talent. To waste that amount of money and have to let go of some of the young players and a fan favorite for EGO is wrong IMO. Hope it works out and they can retain the defensive talent they need to stay competitive. Watching this team from the beginning I gotta say the departure from a defensive super power to attempt offensive superiority is not something I am a fan of or want to see. But guess that chapter is over time to move on. Will be interesting next year. Maybe Caldwell can get him to play at an elite level? Quote

I agree with your assessment! If this was a game of Madden I would trade you lol. If the Ravens signed JJ Waytt(sp?) for 120 I wouldn't be complaining. Defense wins championships!!! Keep saying it with me!!! Bills need to play Fred Jackson a little show he is good to go and trade him. Give Spiller the ball, after he sets the record for yardage and TDs give him 120 mil. Lol play spiller more!!!! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 The problem is if they let him walk who do they replace him with that is as good? He had perfect timing and his checkbook appreciates it. Quote

Spiller is gonna take the title from Adrian Petersen this year (fingers crossed). Finally a coach (I hope) that will use him like the weapon he really is.  I'm not sure Freddy should go, though! Great dual threat IF CJ is the primary from here on. Quote

Only thing they maybe could done is Franchise tag him this season and trade him for another lesser qb if a team wanted to pay for him. Weeden coulda won the superbowl with the team and the way they were playing and the talent around (half serious half sarcasim) Quote

Super User MCS Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 Yeah I thought they would franchise him too but he did rock in the playoffs, 11td and no picks is pretty impressive. Right, it is impressive. My main concern is that he hasn't done this awesomeness over an entire season, or consistently. If we pay him big bucks and he doesn't perform and there is no team behind him then what? Also this great play came after Caldwell took over, who signed up for one more year. that is it, everyone knows Caldwell want to be a head coach again. So if might take his magic fairy dust with him if he leaves then we are stuck for 5 more years with average Joe. Dunno. Hope it does payoff, hard to see it right now though. Time will tell. It would be very cool if Joe reals off some brady like season with 55 TDs and 6,000 yards LOL I will still draft you as my backup QB Joe just in case! Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 The quality of college players has increased in the past years so today some teams beleive they can afford to let a proven player go and replace them with either an up and coming college player or go via the free agent route.  I remember when LSU hired Arnsparger from the NFL to lead the Fighting Tigers. Arnsparger used the NFL guidelines when he went recruiting for LSU players. Now, all the college teams have prerequisits for different positions based on the NFL guidelines for seed, height and weight.  This is why you see a number of college players playing different positions in the NFL although they were outstanding at their college positions.  Too much money involved to make a player mistake so I would think the Ravens know what they are doing. Then again......... 38 Super Fan Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Joe Flacco is really the highest paid player in the NFL now?  I don't care how bad Baltimore thinks they need him, thats ridiculous. I can't believe they didn't laugh him out of the room when he asked for that kind of money. 1 Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 They had extra cap with Lewis and the other guy (can't think of his name off hand) retiring this season to pay him. Keep in mind, Brady took a pay cut to stay with New England. Also so they could keep Gron and Welker with the possibility of future guys. Keeping their cap low. As much as I hate anything Brady, Flacco is not worth 120 million, and a much better QB than Flacco too. 1 Quote

He drafts based on versatility, and often uses players at multiple positions, see troy brown, julian edelman, mike vrabel, and the entire offensive line. Quote
HeavyDluxe Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 I imagine that part of locking Flacco up at that price is the expected merchandising revenues and revenue generating power he'll bring in the next couple years. Â They have to fill more than just Ray Lewis's linebacking. Â They also need to replace lost revenues from marketing. Â The Super Bowl winning quarterback, no matter his real skill level, counts for something. Â Just ask the Giants. Quote
TheKingFisher Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 I can't think of any person that deserves to be the highest paid player in the NFL other than the superbowl mvp, plain and simple. Â 1 Quote

He has had a Great run with ONE team and lets be honest, the Patriots window for winning another championship is closing. So Brady felt that he could cut his pay almost in half to use that money to pay others. Flacco on the other hand is one of several QBs who "was the highest piad" when he got his deal. Im not a Ravens fans, but i feel that Flacco earned this deal, just like Eli,Payton, Brady,Rogers,Brees, and Big Ben did. At this point in his career (28 years old) playoffs every year, and a superbowl win , its not right to compare him to a guy like Brady who is a shoe in for the hall of fame, who is taking an unpresidented paycut so that he can chase more superbowl rings..This is joes time, he earned the mmoney, and shouldnt have to take less just because better qb has chosen to take less than him.Oh and one side note for yall. Tom Bradys wife makes more money than the "highest paid" player anyway. Tom isnt hurting. Besides Brady is a guy who WILL have equally high paying career doing endorsments and televsion when he retires. Quote

He had quite a few shaky games during the season. Flacco is a great QB, but this contract is insane. Hopefully he doesn't follow the same down slide that many do after getting paid. Quote

Very seldom is it apples to apples.  Actually what I should have said is I don't think it makes sense for me to do.   But more importantly, I think guys get paid what they are worth at the time they are worth it and that's always a relative thing from team to team, year to year.  Because player contracts start and finish at different times, you'll always have what looks like some player making too much or too little money for the caliber of athlete they are.   At this time it makes perfect sense for the Ravens franchise to make Flacco the highest paid player in the NFL. preach4bass Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 Beloved Patriots? They're probably the 2nd most hated team in the NFL (right after the Cowboys). The man gave up some money to help his team. Can't knock that. Quote
