Hollisray Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 just got my new shimano stradic reel i allso purchased some berkley nanofill line in 17 lb test. just wandering what type of not to use on leaders and tieing directley to lure. Quote
Doubled Over Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 I use a palomar or double palomar knot for pretty much anything with Nanofil. Be careful though, that line likes to be tightened down a certain way and if it isn't a lot of times it will pull out. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 2, 2013 Global Moderator Posted March 2, 2013 I tie a back to back uni knot with my leader on Nanofil. Make sure to give it a good pull when you tighten it down. Sometimes the knot will slip for some reason but when you get it tied good it holds great. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 Very interested in how it performs on your Stradic. I considered the line, but shied away from it. What's the diameter of the 17? Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 I think you may find 17lb NanoFil a little thick... sure you wouldn't rather have 10lb or 12lb? oe Quote
thehooligan Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Yea, 17lb is a little much for a stradic. Anyway, double palomar for knots to lures, uni-uni is what i like for leader knots... Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 It may have just been my knot or me or something crazy, but I had 3 modified Albright knots fail me this week using line that was slick like the nano fill. I would leave 1/4" tags and pull them down really hard after my final tug. The tags would slide all the way into the knot and disappear. One break off came as the result of a backlash and lost the jig. The others were after setting the hook and getting snagged. Crazy thing was my set ups using 832 to fluoro, I had no issues. I've been hearing of this problem with slick braids and nano fill lately. Anyone else having this issue? Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 2, 2013 Super User Posted March 2, 2013 I believe Berkley reccomends a double palomar. About the only thing I liked about the line is casting distance. I'm back to PP or flouro on the spinning gear Quote
cbass12 Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 I've just started using the modified albright knot and it seems really strong for tying nanofil to fluorocarbon leader. Quote
jignfule Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 double uni for leader - double palmor for lure. Then watch it fray Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted March 19, 2013 Super User Posted March 19, 2013 I tried it when it first came out and did not like it. Now that they came out with the Moss green and I am a year+ more experienced with fishing I decided to give it another chance. Namely because this line did cast a mile! My primary issues before were 1 - Knot slippage. Generally used a regular Palomar. I intend to try with the double palomar and a modified improved clinch knot to see what works. 2 - Fray - Seemed to fray easily. I was not careful with cutting the line. Maybe by paying more attention I could make this line work. I will keep you posted. Quote
rmcguirk Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 I used it a lot over the last couple of years. It does cast a country mile -- it just jumps off the spool. It is strong, at least I never had any breakage issues. It is a bit tricky to tie on the leader. I used the alberto knot. If properly tied, I had no issues, but I needed to tie it carefully (and I do know how to do it), and make sure it cinched down perfectly. Otherwise, I found that the slick nature of the line could lead to a leader pull out, which is obviously not a good thing. Also, in my experience, it was more subject to line twist than braid. Though I did like it, I've gone back to Power Pro 15 lb hi vis yellow braid for my spinning gear this year, and one has the new Tuf Line Supercast. Quote

I ended up reverting back to PowerPro 10lb the last time. I still have that rigged on my tournament stuff. I have one rod/reel for fun fishing and for experimenting with line. It takes a lot to graduate to my tournament set. LOL Quote
BassinB Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 I tried every knot under the sun with that junk. Never again. Quote
