Jika Rig Tips

Just picked up some things from BPS and a couple new things I'd like to try out is the Jika Rig, any tips? Also got some soft plastic craws to go with it.. These Jika were already put together a BPS product..

Also got some gamo wacky rig hooks, never tried this either, noticed these had the weed guards... Jus new techniques gonna try got the yum dinger with this.. Any tips or advice would be appreciated..

Fish the Jika Rig just like you fish a T-rig. The main difference is that the bait

will tend to suspend just off the bottom. I think you will be very surprised at how

effective the rig is at times.

I'm thinking of making my own. I noticed some have just one split ring to connect the hook and sinker. And some have a second split ring. Anyone know if this makes any difference as far as action? Also, they have a long skinny sinker but I just have regular bass casting sinkers with a wire tie. Does this make any difference worth noting?

The advantage of this rig is the way the sinker leads the bait through over.  I have not noticed any bait suspending off the bottom, the sinker generally lays flat, and and the bait lays similar to a T-rig at rest.  The action of some baits when slowly dragged is pretty dramatic, though.  As the sinker ticks small rocks, the bait flutters.  It's pretty sweet retrieved this way with a fishy looking plastic.

 

Rooster, I use the Owner Jig Rig.  There is a welded ring attached directly to the hook, for strength.  Attached to that is a split ring, with the sinker attached to that.  The split ring allows you to change the weight to your preference.  I've swapped them out for heavier, pencil style drop shot weights.  The skinny weights offer better penetration through milfoil that is abundant up here.

I made my own with a Owner twist lock, split ring and a drop shot weight. I rig a BPS floating  8" lizzard. You can smokem' in the spring time.

Made my own with two bell sinkers attached with a good sized split ring.  The sinkers bang against each other adding another dimension to the technique.

 

I love the wacky rig hooks with the little weed guard on them for fishing the tops of weed beds. The other hook I've used is the one with the wire weed guard. It isn't a wacky rig hook, but works just fine in the 1/0 size.  I believe Eagle Claw make them.

I've been making my own Jika and Rage rigs for years, nothing new about either. They just come packaged now. For the Rage I buy the slotted cylindrical sinkers made to pinch on the shank.

Tried the Jika Rig today at pickwick had one break my line.... It was a good fish whatever it was but didn't get many bites on it. Will keep on using this technique I enjoyed it.

I think this rig is going to sweet for me this year.Stacy King loves this rig,I did google Stacy King and the Jika rig and there is alot of info there.And some tank demo's too.It glids alot better compared to the t-rig.I can see the Paca,baby Paca,bevers,swimbaits,ribbon tail worms,lizards,to just namw a few.I can't wait!!!!!!!!

fished a tournament at pickwick and used the jika rig. I caught about 40 bass that day and finished 2nd. Won big fish with 6.5lb. I used a rage craw and slow drag it.

Im tryin it this weekend at a farm pond to try to get some confidence. Never tried it before.  Gotta love the rage craw

The Power Team Lures Craw D’oeuvre has been my go to bait on this rig, being neutrally buoyant it's floats just off the bottom while those claws quiver, it's drives smallmouth crazy!! My favorite is 3-/16oz with a 3/0.

Zseen, nice jib,it is always nice to cash a check. What bait did you use on the jika?

 

I used a 4/0 Trokar hook with a cylinder 1/4oz drop shot weight. Bama Craw color rage tail. I pitched it up shallow next to laydowns or docks, and slowly drag it back. The water was 53 degrees and wind at about 20mph 

 

the partner in the back of the boat was using a biffle head with the same bait, and I was catching 5 to 1 over him.

 

Now with that said, last tournament - last week I tried the jika with not a bite.

I'm surprised you guys are not using the bait that was designed to be fished with the Jika Rig....the YUKI BUG!  comes in 2 sizes.

 

I've been doing pretty well using the 3/16 oz Owner Jika(I know, it's expensive!)   with the 3.5" Yuki in Watermelon red flake.  I HOP it rather then drag it.  Works well in the mouth of a slough coming into a river/bayou. 

 

  Invariably, there is a drop-off from the shallow slough when it enters the bayou.  When it falls off the ledge, they hit it.

Im thinkin of cutting the bottom of a paca craw and and stuff styrofoam into the tubed area and glue it back together so it floats up.

Try the new Z-man Elaztec Craws, they float nice.

 Just take a ear plug and roll it in your fingers to make it small and long and then push it into the Paca craw.It will expand once it is in the Paca and now it will float. No need to cut!

Guys went fishing this last Saturday and we were fishing after a post front had moved through... There were a lot of folks fishing but few were catching anything.... My buddy and I had fished for quite a few hours and had caught nothing...he switched to this rig using a paca craw and with in the hour he started catching fish.....I was using other techniques from T& C rigs....jigs,weightless worms,crankbaits, finesse worms....nothing!  After talking with other fisherman the story was the same the bite was tuff.... but with this rig he ended up with 6 nice ones for the day when everyone else was catching one or two.... It made a believer out of me..... Another great tool to fall back on  when the bite is tuff.....

Memphis, I made one last month and took it to a local lake and caught one on my first cast.

 

I like the idea of two weights to give it some clicking sound. May add a second weight to the ones I made.

 

Rage Craws are great on them!
