I'm going to buy another dobyns rod for fishing jerkbaits and square bill cranks

I can't decide on whether to get the savvy 703 or a champion 704 glass crank rod, I'm trying to save money on this as well but I'll spend the extra 50 if I have to and i know I don't need as much sensitivity either on crank rods, does the glass make that much of a difference or would a savvy one power lighter feel similar? Looking for some opinions on this

I am trying to piece this together to offer you the best advice I can. Let me start by saying a good friend of mine owns the savy 703. I have a 705 CB glass fast action champion cranking rod. With that said it sounds like you want a rod to cover both jerkbaits and cranks. You mentioned the 704 CB glass however from all the Dobyns "experts" I have talked to note the 704 CB graphite is a better choice for fishing those baits up to 1/2 oz.

I have fished my friends 703 savy rod a handful of times but not with either technique you noted. It would be an ok choice for what you want to use it for though I would think it would be a plan B option. It just doesn't appear this rod was made for those techniques.

I know there is a price difference between the two, but I would wait for a 20% off sale, maybe around Easter and pull the trigger on the 704cb graphite. I have heard this rod is a killer topwater rod as well. It will have a softer tip for loading and casting jerks, cranks, and topwaters if necessary, but with a more forgiving action to keep the fish pinned.

Another option would be to call Dobyns directly. Your call will likely take you to one of the family members and they can give you the best advice on a rod that will serve you well for what you want the rod to do.

I agree, I think the 704 graphite would be the perfect stick for what your looking to do.

  I fish vision 110's, mostly on mine. also makes a great wiggle wart rod and smaller squarebills like 1.5's ect.

The 704CB.  NOT THE GLASS.  The glass is a medium light action rod for throwing lighter baits like a 1/8 oz. Speed Trap and similar baits. For square bills, the 704CB might be a tiny bit light if you fish in heavy wood cover.  The 704CB is my choice for a jerk bait rod hands down. It's awesome for poppers and smaller Sammys and so on. One of our new members, Paul Mueller is a great go to guy for info on Dobyns rods.

I have both the 704CB Glass and the 764CB Randy McAbee.

I bought the 704Glass first and used it to cast Pointer 100's, 78's, Staysees, and 1.5 Squarebills.  It handles ALL of those well, including the Megabass Vision 110.  The rod loads very easily and "slingshots" the lures out with very little wrist only effort.

    I liked it so much I wanted another one, but decided to try the 764CBRM for fun.

I find it is a stiffer tip, but casts the heavier Vision 110's a little better, along with the 2.5 RC Squarebills.  It takes a larger lure to load it than the 704.

I have identical reels on both of them:  TDZ's, supertuned.  I take both rods with me:  the 704 has a Pointer 78 on it (Sexy Chartreuse) and the 764 has a 2.5 LC RC crankbait (bull perch.}

Both of these are casting wonders!!

I'm sure the 704CB Graphite and 705 Graphite are also wonderful rods.  But I like the "give" for the trebles....very forgiving.
