tbone1993 Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 My friend is having some of his lures repainted by a friend he is a master with an airbrush. The only problem is that he works on everything besides fishing lures. Should my friend purchase blank baits from a site like jannscraft? Also can you purchase blank strike king or similar brand baits? If he repaints used lures does he have to sand it down the apply a clear coat later? Any info will help, I am basically asking for a beginners guide to painting custom crankbaits. Quote
Christian M Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Yes he does have to sand them down at least to get a good tooth for the paint to stick to. Get yourself a double action Iwata or Paasche gravity fed airbrush, a moisture trap, a decent sized compressor. Createx airbrush paint is the best, you'll need flash reducer & airbrush cleaner for changing colors. As far as clear coat, you need Devcon 2ton Epoxy 30 minute. Quote

A rotisserie motor works fine for this, or you can do it by hand if you're patient. For the airbrush, size .3 and/or .5mm needle size will cover most of your needs. The Iwata Revolution series is a reasonably priced introductory airbrush that you will not outgrow as you gain experience. Quote
BobP Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Using unpainted lures is a crap shoot. Some work great, some not at all, so you have to sift through them to find the winners. Most are knockoffs of popular commercial crankbaits, made in the Far East. None of them are exactly like the commercial lure they imitate so don't expect to paint a $4 Megabass Ito Vision 110 knockoff and end up with a lure like the $25 original. That said, some of them are very good crankbaits in their own right. If you want lures that perform just like the originals, the only way to get that is to repaint original lures. There are various degrees of refinishing you can apply. Full blown might be using a media blast cabinet to remove the old paint, then painting and using a commercial grade UV or moisture cured urethane topcoat. Most hobby repainters lightly sand the original finish, spray on a white color basecoat, paint the lure, then topcoat it with one of several products like Devcon Two Ton epoxy or Solarez UV cured polyester resin. The topcoat you use over the water based paint determines how well the paint job will last. For much more detailed info on the process, you should visit tackleunderground.com, where you will find more stuff than you can read in a year about the process. 3 Quote

BassAssassin85 Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 i have been buying my blanks from dakotalakestackle.com i have bought from a few other places they may be a little cheaper but dakotalakestackle.com puts out a quality blank!!!! I use a 30 minute epoxy but from experience make sure when you do this topcoat process when you put it on i use cheap water color brushes (walmart 30 of them for like 3 bucks or something like that) only do two lures at a time! you'll most likely get hurried trying to get three then miss spots on the first two and if you do two right youll get about halfway through the third one and you wont be able to fix it. I am a member of tackleunderground.com the site is kick bass anything you need to know you can get from there but if you dont feel like straying to another site hopefully my info has helped you and if you need more just give me a shout. sunkist Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 I have to disagree with some of the previous statements. unpaintedlures.com are the best blanks I have ever used. As good as the originals they are copying in my opinion. I have talked with the owner and the company they use to make their blanks sells to japanese companies. Their baits are only sold on their website (unpaintedlures.com), not to anyone else and they hold the rights to the molds as they paid to have them manufactured. Now I have also purchased blanks from some of the other well known websites and I can say the quality of those are not as good as unpaintedlures.com Quote

Jim I agree 100% with Dakota Lakes Tackle, not only does he supply a great blank, but he also has many videos on how to paint them once you get them. And if you don't have the equipment to paint them(like myself) he sells custom painted baits at the best price I've seen anywhere. Quote
