Ordered a rod from BTD last week. It finally came in and I open it up to find the rod wrapped in butcher paper and the tip is busted off. These guys ship 1000's of rods a year I'm assuming and they package it in paper??  Really?!

A lot of you guys buy rods online and have them shipped but after this I think I'm going back to ordering to the store or off the shelves.  Granted they're taking care of it, but now I have to wait on a call tag..send it back to California via ground, then they send me the replacement. That's 10-15 business days right there I bet.

Their customer service was great..it's just the fact of how it was packaged that erks me.   :dazed-7:

I ordered on rod from BTD it took 2 weeks to get here and I was less then impressed with how they packaged it. Needless to say it was my last order. TW and the Tackletrap wrap a piece of tape around the handle end of the rod and tape it to the outside of the tube to keep the rod from sliding forward and braking the tip off.

Just received a new G Loomis from TW today, in perfect condition. TW is meticulous in packaging their rods. What a shame ot will take that long to get it replaced. I have ordered several rods from TW. Never a problem.

Sorry to hear that man, but glad they are taking care of it. I have had nothing but positive experiences when ordered from BTD and the guys are great to talk too and help out over the phone. I will say though, i have ordered 2 rods from BTD and the were packaged well, but TW does a better job when it comes to packaging rods.

I am having a similar issue with a reel. I had to send it back last week and it should be here by Friday, only because I ordered one day shipping on the way back.

Good to know. One of my Compre's I ordered online via Hi's Tacklebox Shop and it was shipped in a super thick tube in perfect shape. Was pretty pleased with the whole process.

I ordered a Powell Endurance from BTD last week also. The tracking number shows that it should be here on Thursday. This is my first time ordering from them, and the process and shipping does take longer than TW. Do they ship the rods in a hard tube???

Mine came in a cardboard tube but its not as thick as the tube TW uses.

Just got my rod from BTD, and it had a Dobyns styrofoam tip protector, more dang paper wrapped around it than I've ever seen. Couldn't hardly get the rod out of the tube. Was impressed, and was thoroughly pleased.  Will buy more from them...

Wow, another horror story from BTD. At least the customer service was friendly with you. They seem to have serious issues with their inventory from my experience. Also, you can order a product from them, wait two weeks and then hear that it is not in stock or wait two weeks for it to be shipped. Then a rod comes back broke, it could be a month until you get your product. I am sorry to hear about your experience. It is hard enough waiting a couple days to receive stuff online, especially if you are excited to get it.

A rod shipped from a supplier should be shipped in a way that is basically indestructible. Shipping companies are notorious for being rough on their packages, it has to be assumed they will not take care of it and packaged in a way to protect against mishandling. TW, THUT, and tackletrap have all served me well so far. BTD just does not seem to get it. Seems like they would figure out why some people refuse to take part in their "sales".

Mine was in a nice durable tube but it was just wrapped in paper and thrown in there. The way UPS handles packages im surprised it was broken in only one spot. Everything else about BTD is great, they just need a little better care with shipping. Either way, it was just disappointing. At least its winter and i won't be out there fishing for a while yet so i guess the wait wont kill me.

Wow. I guess all are not treated equally. Glad to hear your experience was better than mine.

BS? Just because you had a bad expierience that could very easily be blamed on the shipping company. What reason does he have to lie?

How about I call BS on you because my experience has been the same as hooties. I have ordered close to a dozen rods from TW, every one with bubble wrap and tied in place. Every rod 100% what I expect. If your experience was different than mine it must be BS there is no other explanation right.

Calm down Mr Clown, I was just stating that not all of them arrive in A1 condition. I'm sure I have at least a dozen rods from TW and obviously am still buying from them. And yes the rod I received with a bad tip had bubble wrap around the tip and It may have been damaged from St Croix for all I know. I did send them an email saying it had a bad tip and NEVER got a response from them. I figured they didn't get my email because it was the weekend they moved to the new location.

I have had 3 rods broke upon arrival  from BTD but not sure it was their fault as 2 of the rod tubes were bent in half pretty much. They quickly shipped out another while the broken one was in route back to them.

I do appreciate BTD offering prices during sales that are typically better than other manufacturer. I have mixed experiences with both their staff and management when contacting them via phone. To this day I have only ordered one rod from them... a dobyns dx 742. The rod took a little over two weeks to get here. The packaging was satisfactory though not what I would call "safe guarding" against potential handling problems.

A good friend of mine needed to pick up a few odds and ends before the season gets under way. He asked me to help him select some products for his order. His order amounted to roughly $75 after the sales discount and included products we CAN'T buy locally. Well it took them 5 days to get him a tracking number for the order. To top it off, two days after the package shipped they email him stating that two items are no longer in stock and they are refunding him for both. One of which was an item he can't get locally and the other was not that big of deal. Moral of the story they are ALWAYS sold out of many items as noted on their website and even products that they show as in stock. Someone needs to implement a better inventory control system with better "real time" updates. In my experience their inventory of fishing reels seem to be the worst.

I am right there with you Skeletor. I have made countless transactions with TW, THUT, and the Tackletrap without any major issues. Over the last 3 years I have probably dropped in the neighborhood of $3000 at TW. The only minor issue I had is that they couldn't provide me a few packages of back ordered baits before a trip. They never charged me and I was able to find them elsewhere. That is pretty good given i have had close to two dozen orders from them over three yearas ranging from $60 - $400. I have just heard so many negatives about BTD and even alot of positives. It appears as though there are two different crews and depending upon which one you get for your order will ultimately influence your experience with them. For my needs I have shopped elsewhere since last summer.

I've had no horror stories because with only 1 exception did I buy a rod on line.  My exception was not a defective rod but a rod I didn't care for, the hassle of shipping it back plus the wait time in the first place negates any reason for me to buy a rod on line.

I Ordered 2 rods at a time from TW that came in the same tube and they were packaged great. Walmart.com also packages rods about as good as TW which was surprising. I will not order anymore rods from amazon though.

I made the mistake of ordering a rod from amazon also it was the only place that had the rod I wanted because it was discontinued. The first rod was lost in shipping after like day 2 so I called them and they sent a 2nd one. Well both were delivered the same day one was complete the other was in 3 pieces. Im still in disbelief how the 2nd made in one piece. They ship their rods in 2 regular rectangler cardboard boxes taped together so they where long enough for the rod.

Kicker pretty much said everything i was going to say. I ordered a dobyns coalition from them and it felt like it took forever to get here. Ive ordered rods from ebay, amazon, and TW. Worst packaging i got was for my one cumulus on ebay, came in a thin rectangular carboard box with just paper, i dont know how that rod came in one piece, lol.

I ship my rods out exactly how TW does, but i add two more wraps of bubble wrap, one around the middle of the rod, and one around the handle. Then you know there wont be any scratches or anything wrong in shipment unless the tube breaks or bends.

I was actually having a conversation with my girlfriend about fishing rods and she kept asking why do you buy so many rods then sell them again, lol. I said well if dealers carried more rods then i wouldnt have to order across the US from TW to try them out, lol.

I made my first real mistake this past weekend ordering the kistler mag crankbait rod, came in yesterday and within 10minutes it was wrapped back up in the tube and sent back. What a garbage rod, now im out $10 for one day shipping, and $23 for shipping it back.

I have two rods im interested in. the *** and phenix recon, i just dont want to order another rod from california then have to ship it back if i dont like the action/taper.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling, my core is supposed to come in today from btd and its been a looooong two weeks....

Update on this. I had to write an email to BTD 2 days later because they failed to create the call-tag for UPS to pick up the broken rod. That rod is still in transit to California from Illinois. They didn't even bother emailing me back, at least with an update to the situation.  Lack of customer service from any company leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

This will be my first and last order from them. The only reason I didn't cancel the order all together was because I got $20 off a St.Croix rod, and it's hard to find Croix's discounted.  With my luck, they'll email me saying they don't even have a replacement for it.
