I was checking my crank bait inventory. I have a good selection of rattle traps and husky jerks and x raps. But I am lacking in other types. The problem is I just hate spending $8 and up on a Rapala crank. That is just a lot of money. It isnt that I cant afford it. It just seems alot to me. So has any one used the X raps and Husky Jerks with a straight retrieve like a minnow Rap? I have used them with great luck as jerk baits but not with straight retrieve. If I did go out and get some different types of cranks what brands and colors are go to. I fish Lake St. Clair mostly in Michigan. It is not very deep ther for the most part. thanks for any help.

Bandits bombers are good cheap cranks. If you can spend 10.00$ get some little john shallow divers. As for colors in the bombers and bandits a must is sexy shad.Really you need to find out what the bass feed on in your lake then match the hatch. If i had my choice i'd save the money and get you some little johns.

In addition to the brands mentioned, Bomber also represents a good value. I wouldn't worry too much about what to get, just make sure the bait covers the depths you want it to. If you're concerned about color, something muted, say shad or bluegill and something loud, like firetiger, should do you fine.

Bomber

Bandit

Bill Norman lures

Rebel

Cotton Cordell

Cheap nothing fancy and can get the job done. When you get into wood crankbaits they will cost a few more bucks and at times can be worth it. The other baits you mentioned do catch fish on a straight retrieve.

I have had good luck with a claown xrap on straight crankin retrieve.

Ill add Storm Wiggel Warts to the list of cranks to try...they have a very hard thumping fast action.  Great for slow rolling in spring.
