airborne_angler Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 I read in the latest IN-FISHERMAN about using larger inline spinners for Bass. What about other "Trout" lures to catch Bass? Like an Acme Kastmaster. I threw a 1/8 oz version today for the first time and plain wore the Trout out with it. If a larger version were to be offered to Bass think they would find it appealing? Anyone ever tried and had success throwing a Kastmaster for Bass? http://www.greentackle.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/g/o/gold-kastmaster.jpg Quote
maineman Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 No but i have done well on a super duper for brook trout and smallmouths! Quote
CRFisher Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Some of the bigger bass I've caught the last few years have been on a Mepps #4 or #5 spinner and the Kastmaster. Inlines will catch every type of fish imaginable. A trout pattern in stocked trout lakes have worked well for me. I think head to head an inline will outfish a spinner bait in open water, but obviously they don't handle cover as well. The Kastmaster has some flash and wobble but I think the main reason it's worked for me is because it can reach parts that few other baits can from shore. If you're boatless, a Kastmaster or other heavy casting spoon is a must have. Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 9, 2010 Super User Posted April 9, 2010 Define "trout" lure. Guess what 's my most trout catchingest lure ever ------> Rat L-Trap ....... wait ! that 's a "bass" lure. Lures are lures meant to lure any predatory fish regardless of the species. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted April 9, 2010 Super User Posted April 9, 2010 I catch tons of trout on larger inline spinners and crankbaits, and plenty of them on curly tail grubs and tube jigs. But to answer the question, sometimes lures you don't think of will produce bass, I have caught quite a few bass on inline spinners, spoons like daredevles, and even flies. Quote
SausageFingers23 Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Sometimes up here in the northeast I'll throw an inline spinner when the going gets tough, especially in late November when the water is really cold. I've had pretty good success on it. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted April 9, 2010 Super User Posted April 9, 2010 I think that you perception of what is trout lure or a bass lure needs to be re-examined and I don't mean in a bad way. I have come to believe inline spinners and spoons and crankbaits and many other lures have more of a universal appeal to fish, bass, trout, or other species without a doubt. So if you wish to define inline spinners and spoons as "trout" lures, then I will say yes... Those trout lures will catch bass and I am telling you from personal experience. As you would guess, the converse is also true. I have nailed trout and other species with crankbaits and drop shotting. I was field testing my ugly, homemade crankbait at a small lake targetting bass and on about the 5th cast WHAM! In the words of Shaw Grigsby, "He just crushed it. He pummelled it. Golly!" Quote
airborne_angler Posted April 9, 2010 Author Posted April 9, 2010 I too, have caught a fair share of Stocker trout while fishing a Dropshot,as well as Bluegill and Green Sunfish on the same rig. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted April 9, 2010 Super User Posted April 9, 2010 Yup, I hear you, and most of the other species caught were caught targetting bass. Even tilapia and salmon have fallen victim to the drop shot! Quote
Chris Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 Actually the past few weeks I have been teaching my youngest how to work crankbaits while fishing for Rainbow trout. He caught one pushing 4 lbs on a KVD Bomber long A clown pattern. His friend caught another one of equal size on a gold KVD plug. Both bass and trout eat crawfish, bugs, and fish. Anything that might look or act like it they will tag. That Kastmaster and a Rooster tail spinner both look like bait fish and will catch them. You don't need to really scale up the bait either unless you want to. When the bass school up eating small bait you can load the boat on the small trout size. I have also caught both trout and bass on shad darts trout streamers, beetle spins, and other crankbaits. Quote
