Need New Batterys For My Triton

Hi folks, im looking at 3 new deep cycle batterys for my 2010 triton. 2 for trolling (24v), one multi purpose for cranking/accesory. I've done a little research and reading and was wondering if the optima batteries are worth the price. Also, is the factory onboard charger (12 amp total, 2 bank) be good enough. Any feedback would be helpful as i have some FISHING vacation the end of march.  Thx,  Kris

We sell both Interstate and Optima here at my shop. We don't see a marked difference in longevity between the two. There is a substantial weight and price difference so I have no problem recommending  the Interstate or another quality brand wet cell. My boat carries 3 deep cycle TM batts and one Starter. As to the charger, I personally like a charger with the same number of banks as batteries because it can be useful to put a starter batt occasionally on a charger, particularly if you are fishing tournaments with all day long livewells running. I also have a StaynCharge isolator system which charges the TM batteries when I run the big motor.

I switched to blue top Optimas a couple of years ago.  I did it to cut down on the mess of wet cells, have batteries that could set without a recharge for longer time periods and reduce the weight.  So far I have been really happy with them.

 

On the charger side of your question, I like stated above would have a 3 bank charger to keep the cranker up like the trolling motor batteries.  I'd also increase the size of the banks to a minimum of 10 amp banks but prefer 15 amp banks.

Optima batteries are glass mat batteries with each individual cell cased in it's own pocket,  no chance of a cell shorting against one another, or the electrolite transferring lead deposit build up between the plates,  tuff batteries for sure,  vibrations do not seem to bother these batteries near as much as regular flooded cell batteries,  as to the longevity question,  I have seen instances where the Optima has lasted longer than the normal flooded batteries,  in most cases it has only been a year or so,  on occassion I have seen them last 3 years longer,  most of these are from people who take the proper steps especially during winter storage to ensure longevity of their batteries. 

 

As for the charger I agree with the above posts as well.
