Shimano Compre Vs St. Croix Premier

Looking at purchasing a new finesse soft plastics rod, probably something in the 6'6" ML/F range. I prefer split grip rods. What are your opinions on the St. Croix Premier compared to the Shimano Compre. Also, if you have any other suggestions I'm willing to expand my budget a little in either direction.

 

The rod will be paired with a Pflueger President, either the 6730 or 6735

Id go with the fenwick smallmouth rod, hard to beat for the money...

I like both brands. I've had two Compre's (previous gen spinning with the cork handle), and now own a Premier casting rod. Both are incredible rods, great sensitivity.

 

I have used the ML Premier spinning rod that a buddy has and it's more like my M Compres in stiffness. But a fantastic rod for the money.

 

One thing Shimano has over St. Croix is their over the counter lifetime (limited) warranty.

I have Compres and Premiers, but only casting - not spinning so I can't compare them.  Plus, I have the older cork-gripped Compres, not the latest model.

 

On the reel - the "35" size Pflueger spinning reel is pretty big. I have two of them and run 10 and 12 pound line on them - they're really bigger than you need for most bass applications.  I think the "30" size reel would suit your needs nicely - especially if you're talking ML.

Thanks guys. I was leaning towards the 30. And my main appeal towards the Compre is the life time warranty, plus it's a cheaper rod.

I can't speak for the Compre but I used SC Premiers for Years and they are very good Rods for their Price Point.

 

I agree with DarrenM, the ML's are actually closer to a Medium in the Premier Series.

 

The Premiers are available from Cabelas with  a Split Grip
