Stingray23 Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 I'm looking to replace a lot of my treble hooks for the upcoming season, especially for my jerkbaits, and lipless cranks. I'm looking for the best bulk options since I will be buying a lot. Gamakatsu? Owner? Mustad? Which one and what sizes are good? I was thinking #4,#6, and maybe some #2. Let me hear what you guys think. Also, what kind and size of split rings are you using? Quote
BrettD Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 I use mustad kvd triple grips most of my baits have #4 with a few #2 and #6 mixed in. Some baits have one #2 and one #4. Quote
Stingray23 Posted February 24, 2013 Author Posted February 24, 2013 I think the larger, heavier baits get the #2/#4 combo like crankbaits and heavier lipless cranks Quote
Matt Jungblut Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Gamakatsu Treble EWG Hooks Black thats what i use i was using owner but like the other better i use 2-4-6 sizes just depends on the lure Quote
CKFishin Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 I use VMC Barbarians. I however am looking to try Trokar and the KVD mustads aswell tho. 1 Quote

jeb2 Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 One of the well respected guides in this area recommended Daiichi Death Traps at a seminar he gave a couple of years ago. I've been a fan ever since getting my first order of those. They can be bought in 10 packs for very reasonable money at Lure Parts Online. Quote
backcast88 Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 I usually replace mine with the same size as what was on it when I bought it but sometimes I will go up one size. Most of the time I replace mine with Owner Stinger ST-36's. Some get replaced with Gamakatsu Magic Eye Short Shank's. I prefer the Owner's but have no problems using Gama's. It usually comes down to how many hooks are in a pack and the total price (basically it's all about the lowest price per hook). Quote

Stingray23 Posted February 25, 2013 Author Posted February 25, 2013 What do you guys think about getting shorter shank hooks compared to the standard size? Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 I use VMC barbarians, have been happy so far, although I think the eyehole might be a bit small for some of the lures I have put them on. Quote
papajoe222 Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 I'm not a big fan of changing the size of the original hooks and seeing as I replace 70% of all my hooks on cranks and other hard baits, cost is a big concern. I go with Mustads. If I want to upsize, I'll go to a bigger short shank on the belly and the same size short shank on the rear to keep them from tangling. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted February 26, 2013 Super User Posted February 26, 2013 I like Owner Stingers and Mustad Triple Grips Quote
Stingray23 Posted February 26, 2013 Author Posted February 26, 2013 Mustad Triple Grip Wide Gap Treble Hooks, Ref 36233BLN. Very, very sharp. I like those but it appears that the KVD Elites are the same hook but shorter and stronger then the ones you suggested. They are about $6.49-$6.99 for an 11pk in #2,#4,#6 http://www.***.com/Mustad_KVD_Elite_1X_Short_Shank_Triple_Grip_Treble_Hook/descpage-MKVDEST.html Quote
PondBoss Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 VMC Barbarian out barbs are probably the best treble I have every run across. But since they are impossible to find I use a lot of KVD hooks. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 26, 2013 Super User Posted February 26, 2013 For a light lure it's a 3x and heavier lures get 4x, my sizes range from # 6 to 3/0, perfectly happy with eagle claw or mustad. Quote

kylek Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 What size do you guys recommend for the Strike King series? From the 1.5 model up to the 5XD? I have never changed the hooks before but might before tourney season starts here. Thanks Quote
BrettD Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 What do you guys think about getting shorter shank hooks compared to the standard size? The short shank trebles allow you to go up a size and the hooks not get tangled up on the bait. Quote
Diggy Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 I dont unless they bend or break, luckily what I buy seems sharp enough. Ive broken kvd 1.5 hooks by either catching huge turtles and getting in fights on the bank or with the pliers trying to remove one. One turtle actually pulled the loop out of the lure where the split ring attaches so it became a keychain. Lures cost enough already IMO. I used some mustad hook as a replacement, may buy some vmc in bulk later just to have on hand. Quote
