Recon Or Cumara?

So with the bassmaster sale going on at tw I want to get a new rod to pair up with my chronarch. I've narrowed it down to the phenix recon 7'1" hvy and cumara 7"2 med hvy.... Just thought I'd ask you guys for your opinions as to which one to buy. I mainly fish from the bank. I'm going to use the rod for jigs mainly. It's just that I can't decide since I already have a compre with the same action as the cumara and would like something for bigger lures but with the sale on the cumara it's hard to pass up too. Thanks for any input.

I really love my Recon 715.  So much so that I'm looking at one of the X-Series rods for square bills.

Thanks for the input guys. I've made up my decision and have decided to get the recon 715. I've always been a shimano guy but i think its about time i tried something different, especially considering that I already have a rod with similar action as the cumara. Although who knows maybe one of these days if i save up enough money i may end up getting a cumara too haha.

The Cumara is an outstanding jig rod and is far superior to the Compre.  The Cumara was designed to be a bottom contact bait rod making it an outstanding jig rod for casting and for feel.  You can't go wrong with the Cumara especially with the TW sale going on.  Plus the over the counter life time warranty is very nice as well.

I just received this rod, but obviously it will be at least another month before I can get out with it,  It is a $229.99 rod for $69 + $18 shipping.  Guides are all double foot....9 plus tip.

An Internet friend has 3 of them and says they are definitely a $200 rod.  Tells me sensitivity on his Superlite rods come very close to his Loomis IMX.   Also mentioned that if he posted something like this he "would be burned at the stake".

 

Unfortunately the only rod listed is the 6'10" Heavy, Fast...10-25 1/4-5/8.  Might be another option for you.  I would consider getting another one if I hadn't purchase 5 rods in the past two weeks...one of them being the same rod except in the Tour Edition line from TW's sale.

 

EDIT:  Oops.  See that you have already made your decision.  Sorry.  I love my older Cumara and have hopes to eventually own a Recon as well.  I think you will be happy woth the rod from what I have been able to gather from reading reviews.

I have both a recon and several previous generation cumara rods. I know it is after the fact but both are great rods. Sensitivity is similar but the cumara is a touch better, but they fish totally different. The recon is more versatile to me. I think the recon will bring you years of good fishing!

Yeah that what i thought too since i kind of wanted to use the rod for frogging too... And maybe some smaller to medium sized swimbaits. But thanks for all the input guys.

I'd get the Cumura since the sale is going on. Think about it, after you use it and feel like you don't like it you can still sell it and not even lose any money since you got 25% off. Might even make some money. By then the TW sale will be long gone and you know Shimano stuff rarely go on sale.

I'd much rather get the cumara rods.  It seems that you are referring to the new Cumara A series which essentially is made from the old Cumulus blank which means you get a more sensitive rod for a cheaper price.  If I was you, there is no comparisons between the new cumara rods or the phenix recon.

Well, the only Cumara at TW that is *on sale* is the Heavy action rod.  If I'm going full price to full price Shimano vs. Phenix MH I'm picking the Recon every time.  It's a better all around rod, IMO.

I like the decision to at least step outside the box and try another product offering. You can go back and fourth about both rods best and worst attributes. I DONT own the new cumara but I do own the previous generation model. I also have a cumulus. My gut feeling would lead me to believe that the new cumara is somewhere between the cumulus and previous generation cumara in performance. The new reel seat (comfort) and blank color (cosmetic) are left up the interpretation of the individual.

Last year I fished a previous generation cumara side by side a recon. The recon was the 714 and the cumara was the 7'2 mh XF rod. While the rods had different tapers and actions they both were used for bottom contact baits. In my hands the cumara felt a bite more sensitive and crisp. Did I feel like I missed any bites with the recon that I would have felt on the cumara? ... absolutely not. The recon is more versatile and I was able to toss swimjigs and weightless plastics with it do to its action in the tip section.

To the OP I think you will find the recon different from what you are used to. It took me a few outings but the rod grew on me. Give it some time and I think you will enjoy the rod. Worst case scenario you can sell it for pretty good money.
