Classic/ethics/family Question

We all know that defending Classic Champ Chris Lane came in with 0lb yesterday. His brother Bobby, actually did well finishing 16th with 15 and a half lbs.

We know that anglers can be super secretive. But this is the bassmaster Classic!

Question, if you are Bobby Lane, do you try to help or give pattern information to your brother last night?

My answer. Absolutely. Classic or not when he comes in that kind of goose egg, he is wounded. Chris Lane sounded upbeat in his blog, but i think it was a front. That kind of day really messes with your head. And im sure bobby saw that

Chris got his win...so I think Bobby has every right to keep his secrets if he chooses. Bottom line, for these guys it's business. They're out to earn a paycheck so why would Bobby give up his chance to possibly win $500,000?

 

I understand where the family thing comes in. I have 2 brothers, one of which is my fishing partner.  If we were fishing against each other for big bucks...you're d**n right I'd keep it to myself especially if he's the defending champion. Maybe i'm just a cold s.o.b.

 

I'm sure they share enough with each other and I'm sure they scout/discuss lakes together prior to tournaments. But in the actual tournament days, they'd be foolish to give up their winnings. That's life changing money they're fishing for.

Apparently Chris is fairing okay today. Basstrack has him at 17lbs with 5 fish. Not a bad sack for 10am.

Even if they swapped info, it wouldn't surprise me if Chris told Bobby he wasn't going to fish those spots. Bobby is in a place where he could make a run at it with a big bag today and I'm sure Chris knows that.

Hell no you don't share.....until after the tournament for me if it was my brother I would share even less than normal

I also think there are rules about talking about stuff like that but I could be wrong.

It's not against the rules for competitors to swap information among themselves. They just can't get outside help.

Under most circumstances if it were me and any friend or one of my brothers in I would not share anything. Its game on. But i just thought that this cases was a little different. I mean he was 21lbs back and had 0lbs. Not to mention there was slim chances that he would qualify to fish in sunday. There was no threat to Bobby Lane if he were to help his brother. I would have helped if he wanted it, if nothing else just help his mental state. A day like Chris had friday can really hurt you mentally. It was great to see him come roaring back today.

I am an only child, so I can't comment on how strong a bond can be between brothers. That being said, I don't think I would share information with a brother who had already won a classic.

 

However, if it were my Son, I would give my life to make his better. So, I would do anything to help him out. I know this isn't about children, but I don't have a brother so I was just commenting on what I know.

I would offer encouragement.  Ike's motto.  Never give up.  Countless times this past season I didn't have a keeper until the last part of the day.  I just kept plugging along.  Then boom!   A few keepers.  But what it really sounds like is he was on his spots and they started feeding.

Chris may not have wanted the information.  Win or lose he did it himself.

With the level of professionalism these guys have, the smallest amount of info is invaluable. It could be the slightest change in presentation or color and its like a light switch and you have figured out the whole ball of wax that day! I have no doubt that Bobby had some chances on day one, his second day proved that. I don't think he was mentally hurt after day one, probably just made him buckle down and get to work. He would be right there if he had a good first day, same with Amart!!

From what I have read about Chris he is a great guy and I would expect him to help his brother without thinking twice about it.

 

He knows he is out of the big money and he has his place solidified in bass fishing history so why not help his brother?

i would share it with anyone other then my brother

 

allthough I love him to death he has been stealing my honey holes for years

 

i make sure to change my flies when we are at the mountains before i put my rod in the holder at the cabin

I think sibling relationships are as diverse as any other relationship.

Some may be inclined to share and others would not.

We all know what kind of relationships we have........to each their own.

If my partner or brother blanks out day one I am giving him info if I am not in the top 10.  Our team gives eachother helpful hints but we do not give out every detail unless it is a team tournament.

Tough question. Money is a great thing, and I mean a GREAT thing...but I toss my brother a bone. When the money runs out family is there for you. I know I'm in the minority. Oh well. I hate to see a family member suffer.

i was at the classic and it wasnt that he didnt know what he was doing he just didnt have any confidence in his bait and after not catching or even getting a single bite in day one he was frustrated so he was calm cool and collected day two and he nailed it but like he said a day late and dollar short. the sad thing is though day 1 was by far the best day on the water and for him to lose his cool was a bit frustrating for all his fans.

If you don't help a friend/ brother who is down you can't call yourself friend/brother. I have no hesitation in sharing info and like to believe that my brother and friends would not let me suffer if they could do anything to help me. Although we don't fish for serious money I have been involved in National Trials ( fishing to make the South African team) for many years and have both rendered and received assistance on too many occasions to list here.

Suffer?  It's not like his boat was sinking.  It's called competitive fishing for a reason.  I don't fish tournaments but I have my own reasons.  You don't EVER throw a game or give a competitor an edge.  You don't cheat and you don't lie and you should always be genuinely friendly and courteous but that's where it ends-family or otherwise.  There is always time for charity later.  Oh, and I wouldn't expect anything different from anyone else.
