ipeeinmywetsuit Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 THis is a repost because the last one was in the wrong forum. I have an Abu Garcia and Lews reel but I have been wanting to try a shimano chronarch. However I need the reel for either a dobyns 735c mag heavy or the 766 flip.I havent decided on the rod but I want something for flipping and pitching grass, maybe throwing a frog and throwing my smaller swimbaits & wakebaits.Do you guys think a chronarch would handle these applications well? I know they don't have a lot of drag for heavy apllocations but they are 25% off right now and I'm thinking now is the best time to get one if I am going to.Also 6:4.1 or 7:0.1 gear ratio? Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted February 23, 2013 Super User Posted February 23, 2013 I would get one from TW right now for $150 shipped. Get the 7:0.1 ratio to cover those uses. The drag should suffice just fine. To add a little extra "security" you can do a carbontex drag upgrade. This will add a pound or two of drag and make it smoother/stronger. The drag washers will run you under $10. Worst case scenario you can flip the reel with one of your Abu reels if you feel that the drag is still not strong enough. I know a guy that frog fishes with a pixy type r with any upgraded carbontex drag. This reel has fewer #s of drag than the chronarch e and he hasn't had any issues landing fish (even though this reel isn't ideal for this application). I am 90% sure that the chronarch e with the upgraded drag will work. Off the top of my head DVT or the Tackletrap will likely have the carbontex drag washers in stock. Quote

Super User MarkH024 Posted February 24, 2013 Super User Posted February 24, 2013 Stock drags on a chronarch will handle any black bass on earth. Its a great reel and a phenomenal deal on TW. You will love it. I picked up a 50e. I also have a 200e5 Quote
MemphisFF Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Which will be better at throwing cranks and spinnerbaits? Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted February 24, 2013 Super User Posted February 24, 2013 Which ratio I meant.. The E5 slower the better. My spinnerbait set up I use a slow 4,7:1 Pro Qualifier. But for cranks you want something a bit faster like the 5. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted February 24, 2013 Super User Posted February 24, 2013 I cant imagine any bass fishing situation the drag on a chronarch couldnt handle. If uou are really worried just upgrade to carbon tex drag for around 10$. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted February 24, 2013 Super User Posted February 24, 2013 200E5 for cranks Quote
ipeeinmywetsuit Posted February 24, 2013 Author Posted February 24, 2013 e5 for cranking for sure. you want low speeds for more torque; the bait will also get deeper and stay there longer. the reason i would be getting an e7 is for flipping, pitching, and punching you want high speeds to pull the bass out of cover as quickly as possible.
