EvanT123 Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Hey guys I was thinking about this great sport bass fishing and I think one of the greatest things about it, is an anglers ability to catch fish in a variety of places and situations. I'm the type of guy where if I can catch a fish anywhere I'm happy but if you had to pick a favorite type of water what would it be? Mine would be a river be because I really enjoy the variety of fish you can catch (big river smallies)there and i generally prefer to fish open water and/ or rocky water Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 23, 2013 Super User Posted February 23, 2013 Rivers hands down especially ones I can wad like here in NY Quote
38 Super Fan Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Yep, give me a small wade-able river too. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted February 23, 2013 Super User Posted February 23, 2013 As long as the water is wet I'm a happy camper. (I do tend to favor deep, clear reservoirs however.) Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted February 23, 2013 Super User Posted February 23, 2013 Im still new at this and have only fished small lakes and creeks. This guy at my work that I talk fishing with says thats rivers are a whole different ballgame. I have a few near me so maybe Ill try a couple out this year and see for myself. I'd be fishing from the shore though and it seems to me river fishing would be better with a boat. But then again, I guess so would lake fishing. Quote
Super User deep Posted February 23, 2013 Super User Posted February 23, 2013 Lakes. Ponds can be fun too. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted February 23, 2013 Super User Posted February 23, 2013 River or creek would be my choice. I love the elements of a river and the variety they offer. Quote
tubeman Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 I like rivers and creeks. The variety and there is nothing like stepping in a hole that looks shallow but isn't. LOL! I am lucky to have a couple selections of rivers and to have Lake Moomaw a few miles up the road. 1 Quote
Jaiden Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 I prefer lakes, but if I can't get out on a boat I like ponds. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 23, 2013 Super User Posted February 23, 2013 1. Tidal rivers. 2. Secret ponds. 3. Lakes. In that order. 1 Quote
Nick49 Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Lakes of all sizes, natural and manmade. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted February 23, 2013 Super User Posted February 23, 2013 I like a 20-200 acre pond/lakes myself. Small boat and limited access. But then again, there is something special about big lakes on a river chain. The TN river chain and the lakes/rivers that connect it is awesome! Hmmmm, tough choice. I guess I like them all for different reasons! Jeff Quote

Rivers fish differently because they are always changing. Structure is added or removed everytime there is fast current or flooding. Fishing tends to slow down during low current conditions. The fish are always having to adapt to change. During "normal" conditions a river fishes similar to a lake. The fish tend to set up in the same areas. There is a local river I fish with a handful of spots I'm guaranteed to catch fish during "normal" conditions. All those areas are where current changes. Riverbends, down side of an island, outcrops from shore which cause eddys, duckblinds, backwaters, and so on. Obiviously a boat will offer more areas to fish, but there are plenty of guys who wade in areas boats can't get into and do quite well. Quote
tholmes Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 As long as the water is wet I'm a happy camper. (I do tend to favor deep, clear reservoirs however.) X2. Although I mostly fish a couple of small community lakes, I really like fishing the deep, clear reservoirs in the area. Tom Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 1. Tidal rivers. 2. Secret ponds. 3. Lakes. In that order. I definitely like the fishing in tidal waters too. Second would be fishing above the fall line, because I really love to fish fast current. I will fish anywhere, however. Quote
mrmacwvu1 Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 As a smallie guy I love my rivers and creeks. However nothing beats Erie when the bite is on. Quote
Super User MCS Posted February 23, 2013 Super User Posted February 23, 2013 Ponds hands down my favorite big or small. But I like the ones I can fish all the way around because i can learn and solve like a puzzle. Wade fishing saltwater or river would be my next favorite. And a lake with some shore access at a dam or feature or a peir are fun too. Quote
