5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Why are they having it in February? It's a little cold still. Is it in February every year? And also what determines each year's location? Thanks! Quote
Super User Teal Posted February 20, 2013 Super User Posted February 20, 2013 Its been in February for the past 6 years or so. It used to be in the fall. Ive heard people say its so BASS doesnt have to lose audience to the major fall sports like the NFL, or MLB playoffs/world series. Im not sure how they decide on a location. I personally like the new format. Its much like racing now it that they start the year with the granddaddy of events and then work towards a points champion/ angler of the year. Quote
5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted February 20, 2013 Author Posted February 20, 2013 That makes sense. I guess also where they fish determines the temperature too. How many days does it last for? Is it the heaviest total fish at the end of the days determines the winner? Quote
Super User Teal Posted February 20, 2013 Super User Posted February 20, 2013 3 days. Friday - sunday. I think the field is cut down after weigh in each day and only 12 will fish sunday. Best 5 fish limit each day. Heaviest total weight from three days on sunday takes the purse. Quote
5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted February 20, 2013 Author Posted February 20, 2013 Cool. Thanks Teal! ;-) Quote

I also heard they wanted a chance of the weights to be higher for the Super Bowl of bass fishing. Since a lot of southern states will be on a pre-spawn, spawn, or post-spawn pattern. That is why they are choosing where it will be. This tournament was announced in November of 2011. The Classic used to be in August. I would like to see them alternate really. Have the Classic up North in their spawning periods as well. I can't believe I finally get to go to one! Quote
Super User Teal Posted February 20, 2013 Super User Posted February 20, 2013 I didnt care about "competitive" fishin the last time NC had one (2004 i think) Im ready for the Classic to come back to NC. I grew up on Kerr Lake/bugs island and Kerr hosted the classic when i was just a kid back in the early 90s. 1 Quote
5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted February 20, 2013 Author Posted February 20, 2013 I hear ya'! That would be great if they came here. Maybe even to Kerr Lake. ;-) Quote
jhoffman Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Makes me shake my head as to why they didnt pick a lake like okeechobee or sam rayburn Quote
Connor R Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Like most classics, there should be a lot of slow/deep water fishing because of the harshly cold weather...there is probably going to be a lot of jig and pigging on Friday, then the temps are rising some and we might see a little big of deep cranking and maybe some spinner baits throughout the weekend. We will just have to see! I'm ready to see what happens, I think Mike Iaconnelli and Kevin Van Dam will be in the top spots because KVD is a god on the crank bait, but then Ike is more of a jig type of fisherman...My favorite Pro is Ike, but KVD is proven to be a more successful classic angler having 4 wins, and I think he has qualified like 30 times. I wish them all luck and I hope to join them one day. Hey, I can dream!!!! lol Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted February 22, 2013 BassResource.com Administrator Posted February 22, 2013 I'm not a fan of having this event so early in the year. I get why they're doing it (it interferes with the regular season if they push it out further), but these brutal cold temps and weather conditions are tough. I hear a lot of folks thinking KVD or Ike will be front runners, but you really have to step away from your favorites and take an objective look. If you did, then you would see a few "unknown" names surface, such as Jason Christie. The dude is an animal - he only fished 4 elite events last year and won two - and they're hosting this event on his home lake. You may not know his name because he's been tearing it up on the FLW tour the past few years, but trust me, this guy can stick it to the best of them. Keep an eye on this guy. There's others, so don't be surprised to see "no names" near the top of the leaderboard the next few days. Oh....and for clarification...the full field competes the first 2 days, with the top 25 making it to the last day. Enjoy! Glenn 1 Quote

Connor R Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 I gessed it, Ike tied for first day 1 and is in 3rd after a back setting boat malfunction on day 2!!! Pace if in the lead by 7 lbs. and a big fish of 7.xx lbs. GO IKE ON EM!!!! Quote
5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted February 24, 2013 Author Posted February 24, 2013 Trolling motor issue for Ike I think. Man this is gonna be a close one today!!!!!! Quote
Dyerbassman Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Watch out for Paluniuk, too. Guy is used to fishing cold weather, and he finished 4th in the Classic his rookie year. Quote

Super User Teal Posted February 25, 2013 Super User Posted February 25, 2013 That i dont know.... Quote
Dyerbassman Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Then why was it held the same day as the Daytona 500 (presumably many of the same fans) and the Oscars? First off, not too many die hard anglers care about the Oscars, do they? (J/K!) With the Classic, my guess is that 75% of the attendees are from the city that its held in. They will DVR the Daytona if they care about that. But BASS doesn't televise the Classic until a week later, so anyone NOT there is just watching updates and weigh-ins on there computer. So in reality, they aren't competing against anything, because I could watch the Daytona and check Classic updates at the same time, and so could the fans at the race. When it is shown next weekend, there is no competion. Does this make sense? Quote
gripnrip Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Personally I could care less about the Oscars. If the Classic wasn't held in my hometown, I'd be watching it online with NASCAR on the tube. When I found out Johnson won, I deleted the recording. Quote
