Super User Sam Posted February 20, 2013 Super User Posted February 20, 2013 I figured out what was going on in the Mark Trail comic strip. Everyone check it out if you don't follow Mark Trail. It is about a guy using his "special" lure to catch lunkers in tournaments. See if you can figure out how the guy is cheating. Quote

Super User Sam Posted February 21, 2013 Author Super User Posted February 21, 2013 I don't know of any link to the comic strip. It should be in your newspaper. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted February 21, 2013 Super User Posted February 21, 2013 Newspaper is still sold? Just kidding Sam, I'll see if I can find it on line, I'm curious now. Quote
preach4bass Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Never heard of it. Is it a bass fishing comic strip? Quote
Super User Darren. Posted February 21, 2013 Super User Posted February 21, 2013 Hasn't that comic been around for decades? I seem to recall it when I perused the funnies at my Grandma's back in the 70s... Quote
Super User Darren. Posted February 21, 2013 Super User Posted February 21, 2013 It is here: http://www.chron.com/entertainment/comics-games/comic/Mark-Trail/ Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 21, 2013 Author Super User Posted February 21, 2013 Traveler is right! The boy's photos will blow open the case. Stay tuned!!!!! P.S. After the obits and sports section I read the comics. I check the obits to be sure I have not croaked. Quote
Traveler2586 Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 That's S.O.P. for those of us over age 60. But I don't waist time with the sports section,,, unless it's the Outdoors colum of the small local paper. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 24, 2013 Author Super User Posted February 24, 2013 Traveler, we are getting close to having the little boy snap a photo of what is in the van to blow open the case. What I don't understand is how a diver can be in the water without giving up the bubbles? If I was in a boat as a spectator, camera man or tournament official I would certanily see the bubbles. What I always wanted to do was to take a small section of 2x4 and go into the water and pick up a bass fisherman's line and wrap it around the wood. Then I would play like a big bass on the end of the line after attaching a small dink to his bait. I would put up a great fight with the line around the wood and then let the line go so that the guy would reel in the dink after thinking he hooked the mother of all bass. Now that would be funny. You need a life too OK, so it's around 04:30 and I can't sleep which is not unusual for me; so I started thinking what would it take to pull something like this off, and this is what my feeble brain came up with... I really need to get a life About the bubbles - I think if the diver used a standard regulator you could see the bubble plume breaking the water; case in point - watch Hook N Look and you'll see Danny's bubbles a cast or more away. So, you could use a re-breather, or, modify the regulator to pipe the exhaust to a dispersal system that the diver could wear along each side of his body. The system would be designed to put a steady stream of very small bubbles into the water that would be harder to see; but not impossible. Think of an aquarium aerator, or, an anti-ice system for a boat dock, something that puts out very small bubbles. It would have to keep pace with the divers breathing cycles. My big question was - how would a diver control the fish under water? My final answer was the simplest, use a standard chain Stringer connected to an anchorage of some type; like a 10 lb. mushroom anchor. The stringer would only have to handle five good sized fish; or there could be more than one stringer divided in a small work area. Having an engineering background I’d have to have more than five fish to cover the possibility that a fish could escape between the diver’s handling and the fight to the boat; so I would go with ten fish, two per stringer, five stringers scattered in a small work area to make for easy swimming. Each stringer would have a float on the top end to hold the stringer in the vertical position; the float would also support a marker light. Where do the fish come from? Well, that’s a subject for another sleepless night. Here’s the scenario; the angler is using a lure that is lighted so the diver can find it. Having a light means needing a battery, and therefore the lure would have some weight and would sink to a point of neutral buoyancy where the diver could find it. The angler would have to exercise precise boat and casting control to get the lure into the divers “strike zone” or “work zone”. When the angler made a cast he would start a mental count down; if he did not feel the diver’s tug on his line by the end of the count he would play the lure back to the boat, and make another cast. This would appear as regular fishing; you would not make five casts and land five fish in short order, that would raise suspicion in anyone’s mind. When the lure arrived in the divers work zone the diver would capture the lure, swim it to the nearest fish stringer, and hook the lure into a selected fish; he would then release the fish from the stringer and “game on”. When the angler landed the last keeper he would pack up and head to the weigh-in. Starting the big motor would signal to the diver he was done for the day; the diver would release the remaining fish, pack up and return to shore. Depending on the intensity of the lures light this could work in water from gin clear to murky. Like I said above, I need a life Quote

Super User Sam Posted February 25, 2013 Author Super User Posted February 25, 2013 Traveler, today's strip said Rod Bassey was using a lighted lure. The illegimate kid will be taking photos of the inside of the van which will blow open the case. Stay tuned. Isn't this exciting? At our age, everything is exciting. Quote

The Rooster Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 Had a buddy who fished a tournament. The winner had pre fished earlier in the day and staged a stringer up in the back of a cove with fish on it. When the tournament started he simply went to the cove and retrieved the fish. Unfortunately for him, he was seen by someone else. I guess the witness said nothing though. He was allowed to weigh in the fish and collect the winnings, but afterwards on the way to his truck, 3 guys jumped on him and gave him a beat down. My buddy said he wasn't involved but was there to witness it. Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 2, 2013 Author Super User Posted March 2, 2013 Traveler, did you see where the little illegimate boy saw the diving equipment in the van? Getting ready to blow the cover off the tournament wins. Do you think Rod Bassey will kidnap the kid and Mark Trail will have to come to the rescue again? Is this exciting or what???? Quote

How so? This looks like the classic setup where the boy gets pushed into the van, the door slams shut, and he is driven off to the hideout.... This could go on for the rest of the year. Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 3, 2013 Author Super User Posted March 3, 2013 I have no idea who are the kids parents. That is why I call him the illegimate kid. Do you know how he is related to Mark Trail and Trail's live in girl friend? The story could get serious with a kidnapping. But I think Rod Bassey and his friend will catch the kid and Mark will rescue him or else the kid will show the photos at the weigh-in and the local deputies will take Rod Bassey and his friend away. Happy ending is expected soon. We can talk about the comic strip at the Meet and Greet on the Potomac. Are we old or what??? Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 6, 2013 Author Super User Posted March 6, 2013 Traveler. You are right! The kid got kidnapped. Now it is up to Mark Trail to save him and let everyone know how Rod Bassey has been cheating. Is this exciting or what? Quote

Traveler2586 Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I don't think anyone else knows who Mark Trail is, or, even look at a news paper any longer; in fact, I can't remember the last time I sat down to read the paper; if I don't get it from the TV or the net, I don't get it. Maybe we need a cable channel, or website, just for the old cartoon comics? Now,, Go fishin' 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 13, 2013 Author Super User Posted March 13, 2013 Traveler! The illegitmate kid has been kidnapped by that bad guy Rod Bassey and is being held at a secret location. Our hero, Mark Trail, found the kid's camera on the ground where he dropped it when he was taken in the white van. Trail put the pics on his laptop and saw the diving equipment and knows Bassey has taken the illegitimate kid. Now for the search party to the rescue. Isn't this exciting??????? Come on warm weather. I need to get out of the house. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted March 13, 2013 Super User Posted March 13, 2013 This is so exciting I have to double up on my blood pressure meds. And that's just from following the thread, not the comic strip. Quote
