I love to hear a good fish story. But not just any story; one that is moving in ways that us fishermen know, yet can't seem to describe. Those that make you want to go down to the lake in the early morning summer mist and make a cast to those beautiful shadows below that we call bass. Those of the good ol' days, casting a worm with our fathers, and grandfathers.

I think we can all agree that these kinds of stories are great, so would anybody like to share some of their own?

I got one I think is pretty good. I'm not great at stories because I like to get to the point, but here it goes. It's the story of the biggest bass I've ever seen. Me and a buddy of mine would spend a lot of time looking for new fishing holes, mostly ponds really. That's where the biggest, easiest fish to catch are. Anyways, we got to this small lake, or pond depending on your standards. Picture two or three football fields long and maybe two wide. So we unload the canoe and fish. Caught several good ones, 5 pounders, a mudfish- after about 25 mins in. I happened to be paddling, AND up front so I was catching all the good ones too lol. So once we pretty much circled the lake, my friend was complaining that I was catching everything. Then we get to trash talking eachother like usual, etc. So I said "here, you paddle then", tossed him the paddle and proceed to go over back over the area. Not even 2 minutes after I handed over the paddle, some schooling fish jumped near the boat, towards the end I wasn't on. My buddy casted to it. I said "you aint gonna catch nothing". He hooks up, claims that it's a nice one. I said "IT'S A DINK". lol Then the fish surfaced, and I said "HOLY (expletive deleted)", looked like a golaith grouper to me. It was a 13.5 pounder. Till this day, I still never hear the end of that story. lol

great story man! i tend to to a lot of pond searching with a friend also. We found this one pond that used to be part of the Erie Canal (which we also fish) and it turned out to be full of lunkers! The best part was that they would hit anything. I threw out a ribbontail worm WITHOUT the tail part (really just a chunk of plastic) and a two-pounder hit. We've seen pike in there too. It was just a really great find!

I remember when you posted that one, RW.  And if you never catch that world record smallmouth you will always be haunted by that one fish that got away.  We all have lost fish now and then but I'll bet that one really gave you a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach.

I was about twelve years old and rode my bike about three miles every weekend to the city water supply lake. They had an old fishing pier at the end of the lake and armed with two Zebco 33 combos I was ready for action. One rod had a chartreuse grub for whatever was biting. The other had a yellow spinnerbait, single colorado blade.I remember because they were gifts for my birthday along with a tacklebox filled with other lures from my family.

It was early April and not long after my start I caught a small crappie about six inches long.It was my first crappie on an artificial so I put it on the stringer to show my friends if they showed up later. Not long after a game warden approached and asked how my luck was going.I said a little slow and pointed at my stringer. When he saw how small my fish were; although legal, he smiled.  He said if he was fishing he pointed at the shore and my spinnerbait setup and recommended me give it a try.He wished me luck and as he was walking back to his vehicle I grabbed my rod and gave it a cast.

I think I got about three or four turns of the reel when all hell broke lose. The biggest bass to date I have ever seen was tailwalking in front of me with a yellow spinnerbait in the corner of its mouth. It was splashing so loud I turned to see if the warden heard all the racket .I almost yelled for help when the giant jumped one last time sending my lure back in my direction.I heard his truck start and pull away and all I wanted was someone to say wow that was incredible but it didnt happen that way.I cut that crappie loose because I was no longer a perch jerker like the rest of my fishing buddies(at least not for the rest of that day).I was a Bass Hunter.

With age the memory fades, but I do remember my first pike when I was about 7 years old using an artificial lure.  Even though I have vivid memories of that catch that is not what I remember most about the outing.  My dad and I were fishing in rowboat with his 6.5 hp Elgin ob on the Detroit near Bobolo Island on the Canadian side. We had engine failure, my dad puts on shore and while he was tinkering with the motor I'm casting and caught the pike.  He couldn't fix it, my dad rowed against the river current back to the boat livery on the American side, to this day I amazed how he did, he was only 5'4 and 160#.

wow, that's amazing! sometimes those other things, like the motor breakdown, are the things we remember...
