Spinning Rod Type?

Hey guys, 

 

I have two bait casting reels and I tried to worm fish with them before and I just don't like it. I've used the worms on spinning rods before and I much rather prefer that. Do any of you guys have suggestions for spinning rods and reels for worm fishing for Largemouth bass and that are at a reasonable price?

Depending on whether you swim the worms, or do more of a bottom contact type presentation is gonna depend on the sensitivity you will need.

Good question! "Worm" fishing means different presentation techniques to different people. Each has their own type of equipment. If you are looking for an "all around" rig, we'd have to know that too.

Any $50 rod/reel setup will catch fish using a senko.  I have a $65 Abu Cardinal setup which I love and keep in the car for those Emergency Bassin' moments.

 

My tournament stuff is more expensive.  All depends on your budget and what you are willing to spend.

Sorry about that. Yeah mostly texas rigging the worm with probably a 6inch + worm on it.

Check out Lew's tackle. They have a line up to meet anyone's budget. I realy like there speed spin series, almost changed out all of my spinning reels to them. For texas rigs or senkos, I prefer a 7 ft. med. action speed stick paired with a speed spin 300. This reel has a fast retrieve (30 ipt) for taking up slack.

I like a rod with a fast to x-fast taper, and more like a MH power.  Not the usual, whippy spinning rods.  I found one I really like, though it may be out of your range: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/pinnacle-DHC5-performa-review.html

 

It's around $160, which may seem high, but you get a TON of rod at that price. The other rod I might recommend is a Saint Croix Eyecon ECS68MXF.  Ignore the fact it's marketed as a walleye rod.  I use a couple of these for bass fishing just fine.  They are around $100.

For me, a lot depends upon the type of bottom/cover I'm fishing. Sandy, rocky bottom I will most likely be on a M/F spinning set-up. For heavy laydowns, grass, etc. I am going to go to a MH power with baitcaster.

I used to use a spinning rod on worms for bottom contact and swimming both. Any rod would swim them as fas as I thought. I wanted a crisp feeling rod for bottom bumping them, for more sensitivity. I like a medium power with fast tip for most of this, but sometimes a medium heavy could be needed, depending on cover being fished.

I switched to casting gear for worms though and now I wonder how I did it before without it.

for straight up Texas Rig, use a 7 foot fast action rod.

 

for dropshot, shaky head, finesse worm fishing, use a 6'9" Medium Light rod.

I think you can find this for less than 100 buck's and is a great worm rod on a budget, PS70MF for heavy wood, weeds, and rocky bottoms maybe a PS70MHF, both great choices for the dollar.

6'8" M/XF St Croix Avid or LTB would be my ideal set-up. As a matter of fact, the 6'8" LTB IS my set-up for t-rigging worms and lizards.

I found a St. Croix Premier (casting) M/F rod at Dick's Sporting Goods for $50. It's fantastic. My buddy scored a ML Premier for around $25 on a similar clearance last year.

 

Point being, you can find $100 rods on clearance. I'm thrilled with my Premier. My spinning rods are $100 Shimano Compres, also excellent rods. I'd love to have some St. Croix spinning rods. I've looked at the Eyecon rods and think J Francho is spot-on with his thoughts.
