I have a lot of 5/0 and 4/0 hooks, but I have read where some people prefer larger.  What is the general consensus on hook size for large worms?

A lot of people use 5/0 for 10" worms but I perfer a 7/0 Owner offset worm hook.

+1 for 7/0

I use owner 11/0 for 10+ inch worms

a few people have said 7/0 off set hooks by Owner , but i use the Owner "over sized" worm hooks in 7/0 ( they also have an 11/0) these work VERY good for 9-12 " worms !!! i don't like the off set hooks cause i feel they make the worm spin when i throw them weightless over grass and i want the worm to track straight with no twist , just twitching it giving the worm alot of action and no twisting of the line ;)

these are the hooks i'm talking about below

Do you all prefer wide gap or extra wide gap, or just plain worm hooks?

the one above your post ;D J/K !!! seriously tho , when you get a hook the size of the one i posted ( Owner over sized worm hook ) they have a decent gap allowing excellent hook penetration , so you get an all around hook out of this one ( longer length , good gap , and very sharp hook ; cutting point hook )

Yeah I meant to say oversize worm hook.  Thanks for mentioning it to remember me.

I was using 4/0 and 5/0 until a friend of mine that fishes the FLW said to use 3/0 or 2/0.  I switched and I have caught a lot more fish.  Not sure if I have caught more fish due to the fact I have been fishing longer or what.

He uses a 2/0 for everything is what he told me on the phone a few nights ago.  Not saying he is right, I guess it just proves there are tons of different strategies.

A friend of mine does the same thing. I use a 5/0 and was surprised to see him using a 3/0 for an ole monster, but he consistently catches fish with it.

I select hook size based on the thickness of the plastic not the length of the plastic  ;)

A Zoom Ole Monster is not that thick when compared to say a Gene Larew 10.5'' Big Daddy Worm, you could get by with a 3/0 or 4/0 with the Ole Monster but a 5/0 is minimal for the Big Daddy.

Last year I started using a hand poured 12" worms. A friend of mine makes his own baits. I used a 2/0 ewg and was loosing fish. I asked him what he used and he told me not to use anything less than a 7/0. I guess it is pesonal prefrence but I caught a lot more fish on the 7/0

That makes sense.

A 10" black worm is just about all I throw while night fishing, and I have a lot of success with a big worm during the summer months.

This 5/0 Gamakatsu offset round bend worm hook is The Hook to use for big worm fishing in my opinion.

Yeah, I use the 4/0  Gammy offset RB for my 7" worms and have a few 5/0 laying around so I will give them a try. Thanks again for all the replies guys
