ive gone through about 4 of these in the past two days because the paint was comming off so bad. i use the blue back chrome. the bait is awesome but the paint chips and scratches off so easily from either bass teeth or plant life. have i got a bad batch or is this typical among strike king red eye shad chrome baits or rattle traps in general? thanks fellas. for 6 bucks a pop id like it to last more than a day of hard fishing

You are not alone, the "Sexy Chrome" is a major killer to the LMBS and Hybrid Striped bass on my lake. I notice the hooks are garbage too. They break very easily. I hate that the chrome finish comes off so easily too. after about 4-5 fish it is torn up. I am just throwing them in the repaint bin now. Gonna try some XR50s to see if they are any better. I do have a lot of Rat-L-Traps but they don't do as well with the yo-yo retrieve IMO

Hmm.. I've caught about 15 bass on my most productive one, and there's not a scratch on it. Maybe 5 or 6 at the most on some others, no problems with them either.

The only one that has scratched paint or anything is one I caught a pike on last summer.

I spent four days on Guntersville throwing an xr75 and a 3/4 oz. RedEye Shad.

Both experienced normal paint wear.  I've got several RES's that have been fished quite a bit, they still look like new.

Maybe it's just the chrome finish that's a problem?

The Red Eye Shad in the photo has caught 41 fish in the past 2 weeks. No chipping or peeling - it does have teeth marks - and one point of the front treble broke off (guess I should replace that hook one of these days !).

this is consistent problem with all of the chrome or gold ones...the other red eye shads are much better.

Yeah I should have said in my post that it is mainly the chrome finishes I have a regular sexy shad ones and they last much longer. I guess the chrome finish is just thinner or something?

what i like about the red eyes is when they start to peel it takes awhile before they look bad.when a trap peels it comes off by the second time i use it

All the chrome or gold ones I buy, get an extra topcoat and the finish lasts as good as the regular painted ones.

What do you topcoat them with?

Thanks

Tom

I haven't had the problem with the finish scratching, but the eyes tend to peel off fairly easily with the ones I've used.

If any of you guys have any crankbaits with trashed finishes and don't use them anymore, let me know. I'll either buy them from you or I can refinish them for you.

Always had this problem with chrome baits. I don't think they are painted, I think it is a coating like old car bumpers. One chip and it's only gonna get worse. A chip in paint can stay that way for years.

anyone else try to clear coat their lipless cranks and what are you guys changing your hooks too?

I got some BPS assorted trebles and actually like them alot super sharp not quite sure how strong they are quite yet though

I wanna get some owners or gammys two favorite hook brands

no no.

its not just the chrome.

both of my sexy shad colors... and the redish one that i have have lost their paint within the first couple of outings.  they still catch fish but like stated earlier... for 7 bucks id like the paint to be a little more durable.

btw... the one knocker that i baught lost one eye the first trip out.... the second eye the next.

all it caught was one undersized crappie out of grass.  no abuse whatsoever.

You must be snakebit.

I would contact Strike Kings customer service dept. They'll probably send you 10 new ones.

BTW.

BPS has them on sale:

P.S. Just read a 13+ LMB was caught on Pickwick Lake on a Sexy Shad Redeye.

I coat my chrome baits with clear nail polish. That helps tremendously.

Couple weeks ago I bought something that was with the nail polish, some kind of a protectant to put on fingernails after they are polished. Seemed like a good idea, but...It actually started to eat the paint on one Redeye that I put too much on.

Stick with reg. clear polish and just do a light coat, that's all you need.
